Book Description

3 Feb 2000 Oxford literacy web. Variety stage 7 fiction
Variety books provide a support and an extension of reading skills acquired from reading Duck Green School Stories. They are divided into consolidation stories (The King's Ears, The Strange Dream and The Boy Who Talked to the Birds) and extension stories (Rohan Goes to Big School, The Tale of a Turban and The Costume Parade). Can be used in the Literacy Hour for shared and guided reading. In Stage 7, Julia Donaldson retells 3 folktales: from Wales, England and Scotland. Pratima Mitchell describes Sunil's wish to wear his baseball cap at his brother's wedding in India. Pamela Mordecai tells two stories set in the Caribbean: how Rohan has a new cricket bat which the older boys want to play with, and how a four friends enter a competition to win a fancy dress prize. A bright, lively set of stories for children around 6 years old (Year 1-2).

This book was clearly written on demand. I used it as a group read with some children and the unanimous opinion of the group was that it was pointless. Nothing happens in this story to keep the children engaged, there is no suspense, there is no excitement or drama and opportunities to include these are missed, each turn of the page is a disappointment, the children came up with far more interesting possibilities. As a book to engage children in reading it fails totally. It was written by the author of The Wombles so I am unsure what happened - perhaps it was written as part of a contract with the publisher. If you are a school that is using it I would heartily recommend that you consign it to your emergency reserve stock unless you wish to drive the children further into the arms of the Sony Playstation or X-Box.
