5.0 out of 5 stars Pint-sized but packs a punch 3 Oct 2012
Format:Flexibound|Verified Purchase
Beware what the reviewer Florence says about eligibility for exams (read on to find out why).

FORMAT
It's a pocket dictionary - however, it might not fit in ALL pockets because it's quite a fat little dictionary. The cover made of 'bendy plastic', which means it won't dog-ear and you can also wipe it clean - excellent!

USAGE
The Japanese is all in kana (hiragana or katakana, as appropriate), which is far better for increasing one's fluency in the Japanese script - and this is needed as you get past a very basic level of learning. Nevertheless, it's a learner's dictionary: a cursory scan through it reveals what seems to be a smaller vocabulary set than you might expect for a dictionary, even of this size. It's not a criticism - just that this will not be the dictionary for you if you're studying at university level.

EXTRAS
Okay, referring to the point Florence (the other reviewer) makes about using it in an exam. I honestly doubt you can use this dictionary in an exam. Why? Right in the middle of the dictionary, there's a section of about 30 pages which is a phrasebook - all of it is in Japanese characters (as well as in English), so I can't see invigilators allowing such a dictionary into an exam. Check first, as you wouldn't want to be disappointed - i.e. not being allowed it at all, which would severely cripple you in an exam.

OVERALL
It's hard not to offer this dictionary 5 stars. For a beginner/intermediate learner (I'd say up to and including A.Level standard), I'd say it's hard to beat. It's a small dictionary, so you can take it anywhere with you. I know it's possible to get dictionaries on your iPad/netbook/laptop these days, but a paper dictionary does not require batteries, and has no 'boot-up time'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive dictionary for Learners 15 Jun 2012
Format:Flexibound|Verified Purchase
This dictionary was purchased for a school library. It is useful as a dictionary for English learners of Japanese and Japanese learners of English. It can be used in the exam situation as it doesn't have extra sections that would make it ineligible for use in public exams in the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice mini dictionary 2 Oct 2013
Format:Flexibound|Verified Purchase
I bought it because it is written in Hiragana not romaji. This dictionary is really helpful for people who are beginning to learn Japanese. It helps you get familiar with hiragana.
