Book Description

25 Sep 2008 0199544395 978-0199544394
The Oxford History of English traces the language from its obscure Indo-European roots to its position as the world's first language. In accounts made vivid with examples from an immense range of documentary evidence, including letters, diaries, and private records, fifteen experts describe the history of English in all its versions, written and spoken. They reveal the language's rich and protean variety over the centuries and chart the progress of all its versions, standard, regional, and international. With impeccable and approachable scholarship, they describe and explain its constantly changing sounds, words, meanings, and grammar. This is a book for everyone interested in the English language, present and past.

Review

"Any mature and intellectually curious reader will find something of appeal in the well-crafted chapters that encompass the entire chonological range from (pre-) Old English to Modern English. The Oxford History of English is the best companion reading for literary scholars, historians, and sociolinguistics; it broadens significantly the extralinguistic information, which often leads to new ways of accounting for language change." --Language

4.0 out of 5 stars Very scholarly 17 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book probably tells more than one really wants to know but it is very informative. Despite the chapters being written by different authors, the style is uniform. Don't expect humour or narrative but one learns a lot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Loose collection of highly academic articles 17 July 2010
By Fisher
Format:Paperback
If you want a basic understanding of how Old (Anglo Saxon)English mutated into present day English- don't buy this book. It consists of a series of academic papers by different authors, each going into depth on the more obscure academic fine points of their area of expertise. For example ,there are no examples of a sentance and how it would be written over the course of time( and why it had changed). There is no example of how the leap from Old English to Middle English occurred. The authors assume a very deep knowledge of linguistic syntax (I have a Ph.D. and I found this about as easy a read as Hawkins book "A Brief history of Time" - with which it will be sharing the same cardboard "carboot" box) Overall, very disappointing.

This is a fascinating book, for anyone interested in how language has progessed. Tracing from it's roots to present day English language, used world wide.
