This is a good lock for the money. I use this to lock my racing bicycle up outside work and it is long enough to get round a lamp post and the bike frame. The key operation in the lock is precise and the chain is nice and chunky. The lock its self looks nice and secure and the material sleeve over the chain has stopped it scratching the bike frame.

edit. Spotted a thief trying to steal my bike last week. He had a large set of bolt croppers and was about to attack the chain when I interrupted him. Have decided that this lock and chain is not enough of a deterant! Going to upgrade to a 16mm chain and lock like the Almax or Untouchable. The Oxford is a good chain but it looks like it is not enough to put off a determined thief with a big set of bolt croppers.

Great lock, I bought it for my bicycle after my last one got nicked. This is heavy duty and would take any would be thief a long-time to get through assuming they even could. Easily better value than any of the D-Locks you'll find at more than half the price.

One word of advice though if you wish to have a lock that you can carry around with you this isn't it. It weighs over 3kg... security comes heavy!

As the title of this review states the chain is heavy duty but I have now had two Oxford locks in the last year for my bike and in both cases the locking mechanism plays up. The parts inside the lock seem to separate and become out of sync and eventually its very hard/fiddly or impossible to unlock. I doubt I'll buy another Oxford locking product.

If you're serious about bike security then this is the lock to go for.

Bike locks are generally rated on strength using the universal 'sold secure' standard which rates locks as bronze, silver or gold.

Most Gold rated locks are of the rigid D-Lock type and for the small handful of 'gold' rated chain locks you pay a premium, the Fahgettaboudit from Kryptonite for example will set you back just under a hundred quid.

So, I have to say that i'm very pleased with this Oxford lock which carries the all important gold rating and because it's not a D-Lock I don't need to free up space on my bike frame for a bracket to hold it.

The lock itself is made up of a VERY heavy chain which is encased in a fabric sleeve, to protect your bike from damage, and the actual locking mechanism. The lock is basically a mini version of a D-Lock and it comes with three keys so you should always have a spare.

At the end of the day a determined thief WILL get through any lock but the trick to bike security is in an old saying.

"If two people are being chased by a Lion you don't need to run faster than the Lion, you just need to run faster than the other person!"

With this lock the chances are that most thieves will take one look at it and go for an easier target instead.

Firstly you need to consider whether 1m is enough. It does seem rather short when you're trying to secure your (motor)bike to something. Personally i use it to lock the front brake disc to a ground anchor so at least a thief has to work a bit to steal my bike!

The chain is very good. The lock can be a little tricky sometimes but eventually works - i think the levers get a little out of alignment occasionally meaning the key wont engage properly. It's not really a big issue or very frequent but can be infuriating when you're on your knees trying to get it to unlock.

Would be perfect for a bicycle but consider a longer one for a motorbike if you need more versatility and can put up with carrying the extra weight.

This look and chain are great value for money and feel really safe, you get a 1m heavy duty chain thats inclosed in a branded fabric and the chain is protected so wont rust when left outside. Additional to this you get a lock that can be used two ways either through the chain supplied or used as a separate disc lock, great multi use. You get lots of spare keys for the lock if you lose one and the lock itself feels solid and has a anti lock pic mechanism when you put the key in.

Overall I've had this product just over 8 months and its never let me down, every night its looked up out in the elements on the chain then every day I just use it as a disc lock and leave the chain at home. Really is a no brainer product.

i had this nearly 1 year £27 and use it for my bicycle mainly for work. it is very heavy and durable. i get funny looks sometimes when locking this to my bike as it looks more expensive than the bike itself. but it does what it advertised and is still in very condition since its left outside exposed to any weather. if u have a expensive bike or motorbike than dont hesitate to get this.

It is a great lock, long enough chain to go around front tyre and the cycle frame (but not up to the back tyre). It is really heavy and solid, carrying it in a bag will make you feel the weight. However if you have Abus ST250 bag it will fit in their (lock and chain). ST200 fits the chain alone but you really have to slide the chain in a certain way to fit and zip.

Coming back to the lock, the reason for one less star is that the key sometimes does not sit in the first time and i had to attempt it again to open. This was after just a few times of use so I did not have much confidence in the durability of the lock so I sent it back. But having said that, i do not have any doubt in the strength of this lock/ chain. Very robust and will deter many theives.

Overall its a great product at great price, but I will recommend who ever is buying it should sort out how to carry it (if you plan to at all). Putting it around the frame/ seat post will put hairline scratches to the frame which i was not prepared to accept on a new cycle so i had Abus ST250 bag for the purpose.
