Product Description

Product Description

The Oxford Handbook of Psychiatry provides comprehensive coverage of all major psychiatric conditions and sub-specialities. It is aimed at psychiatric trainees, medical students studying psychiatry, trainees entering individual psychiatric sub-specialities, consultant psychiatrists, general practitioners and other health-care professionals who come into contact with psychiatric patients. It provides detailed and practical advice on the management of psychiatric disorders, in-depth coverage of psychiatric assessment, psychopathology, evidence-based practice, mental health and capacity legislation in the British Isles, difficult and urgent situations, transcultural psychiatry, and therapeutic issues. The new edition features a completely updated legal section with coverage of the new English mental health act, updated coverage of the Scottish mental health act and new coverage of incapacity legislation in England, Wales and Scotland, a completely updated section on schizophrenia, and the addition of new drugs and new clinical guidance from recognized institutions such as NICE. It also includes specialist chapters on learning disabilities, psychotherapy and child psychiatry reviewed and revised by specialist registrars currently working in the fields. The book is internally cross-referenced and has both key references to important papers and to further information resources. As well as being indexed alphabetically, it is also indexed by ICD-10 / DSM-IV codes, and there is a quick index for acute presentations. This handbook is practical and didactic in style, designed to provide portable reassurance to doctors beginning psychiatry. There is helpful advice for the management of difficult and urgent situations, and the text is peppered with clinical observations on the practice of clinical psychiatry and guidance based upon the experience of the authors.

Covering psychiatry from A to Z this book is indeed an essential for every student, trainee and even the experienced psychiatrist. Subjects ranging from the arcane to the obvious leap out with clarity. The authors' style is concise yet inspiring.

Theoretical aspects from psychoanalysis to the dopamine hypothesis are covered with attention to 'real-world' psychiatric applications. This text succeeds where others have failed in terms of ease of use and being pocket-sized!

If you're a foundation year trainee-in-waiting then don't hesitate to get in line for this essential 'road-map' for your psychiatric post. As someone who is about to sit their membership I have already found it invaluable.

Highly recommended!

I recently bought this book for starting a block working in psychiatry. On my first meeting with my consultant he was about to advise me to buy this book when I showed him I had already bought it-his feeling is that this book would be sufficient for anyone (such as myself) who is new to psychiatry and will be working there for a short term (eg 4 months/6months) and covers all the neccesary topics. Obviously if you were to have a specialist interest in a specific condition or be in a subspeciality of psychiatry then worth checking what your department would suggest however if you're going to general psychiatry or doing oncalls there this should do the trick. It's also quite an interesting read.

Fantastic Book! 31 Mar 2011

I am a student social worker, and bought this book on Amazon after seeing it in a bookshop the book is very useful for anyone working or on placement within a Mental Health setting, it gives an overview of all of the different mental illnesses along with information about medication, therapies, cultural mental health issues and legislations. There are a few issues within the book where some things have been worded in an incorrect way for example "incapacity legislation" which should be the Mental capacity Act", worded incorrectly as people are deemed to have capacity unless proven otherwise, but other than that it is a fantastic little book with everything you need to know.
