"More than fifty researchers and practitioners have contributed to this handbook from three continents (UK, US, and Australia), bringing a more diverse view of the workplace....The handbook is a must have for students, researchers, consultants, and coaches who seek to bring the latest thinking from positive psychology to the workplace....Consider adding the Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology and Work to your bookshelf in your quest to make work a more positive experience."--As reviewed by Margaret Greenberg, MAPP, for Positive Psychology News Daily

"This volume is likely to become a primary resource for anyone--including CEOs, HR directors, consultants, and coaches--interested in the application of positive psychology to work."--CHOICE

."..An excellent summary of the state of the field of positive psychology and work...numerous case studies and vignettes often tell exciting stories that point to stimulating directions for future research. Graduate students and practitioners new to the field will likely be inspired by what they read. There is so much of value here, and all involved are to be commended."

Product Description

Part of the Oxford Library of Psychology, the Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology and Work examines what positive psychology offers to our understanding of key issues in working life today. Drawing on the disparate literatures from positive psychology, management, I/O psychology, and human resources, the volume begins with a consideration of the changing world of work that sets the context for the rest of the book and then moves into a specific consideration of work issues from the perspective of positive psychology. Chapters focus on such topics as strengths, leadership, human resource management, employee engagement, communications, well-being, and work-life balance. The volume will be a core resource for both researchers and practitioners interested in the application of positive psychology to work.

Review of Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology & Work 28 Mar 2011

This recent book smoothly brings the concepts from the emerging fields of positive psychology and positive organizational scholarship into the workplace. The book offers a variety of ideas for those who wish to create more positive space in their organizations. Not only did it lay a foundation, but it expanded positive concepts into leadership, work environment and models of success. I found the articles informative, comprehensive, well-selected and well-written. It will benefit both academic and practical endeavors. Kudos to the editors and the authors.
So positive ... perhaps too positive 11 Sep 2011
By Markku Ojanen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I agree with other reviewers that this is a very good collection about positive psychology related to work, but I had a great sympathy with the chapter by Samantha Warren, who critisized quite harsly the applications of work related positive psychology. The authors are very idealistic about positive psychology. Is this again a way to increase productivity? Perhaps the best advice would be this: work less and not engage too much in work! Along with positive psychology worker stress and exhaustion and emotion work and all kinds of problems seem to be increasing. Are these related or not? Perhaps not, but the present work culture requires too much from the worker. The major aim of worker-helping positive psychology should be this: How to ease stress and overworking.

I have never quite accepted Barbara Fredrickson's broaden and build theory, which is used and commented in many chapters. I know the research results, but I still believe that the real changes and major ideas come from pain and angst. Why the really great thinkers and artists so often have marked mental problems? Arnold Ludwig's book about 1000 great people shows this. Perhaps we common people like to work when we are in good mood and then get small ideas, but great ideas require tears!
