Product Description

Review

In short it's a little surgical gem. (Glasgow University Medical Journal )

[It] perfectly summarises surgery in all its glory... a concise and appropriate text for students and doctors alike... the 'Practical Hints and Procedures' is pure genius... I highly recommend this handbook for anyone embarking on a surgical rotation. (GKT Surgical Society Website )

This book... is destined to enter the hearts, mind and pockets of medical students, housemen, junior surgical trainees and a myriad of other healthcare professionals... forms part of the essential kit for anyone who employs the art and science of surgery to improve the quality of life of their patients. (GKT Surgical Society Website )

It goes the extra mile to provide enough up-to-date information to satisfy even the most hair-splitting consultant. I found it an indespensable assistant on the wards. (Priya Sastry )

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for undergraduate students, 7 Sep 2009

The most important thing to realise about this book is that it is ideal for medical students on their general surgery rotations. It covers everything a student needs to know about general surgery in succinct detail. It is a little lacking in anatomy / diagrams but that is what Gray's is for! I'm not surprised the MRCS types are disappointed as it seems to be pitched below that level. However, it is great for me (5th year medical student at Birmingham University) and I use it as a main textbook as it summarises all the knowledge from larger books, such as "Principles and Practice of Surgery", without a lot of the unnecessary detail that is only needed later on in surgical training. Definately one of the best oxford handbooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and very reader friendly, 10 Mar 2010

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)
I bought this for my foundation training rotations in Surgery and orthopaedics, mostly to get an overview of general surgery and surgical specialities; I must say that I love this book. It is not only concise and succinct; it is very reader friendly. It has been updated to take into account evidence based practice. The revision includes new information on the assessment and preparation of the patient, anaesthesia, critical care, the key components of general surgery and surgical specialities. Because it is so reader friendly( by this I mean that it is not cluttered or busy(like OHCS/OHCM) each topic is on one page or two pages with marginal space for notes and easy on the eyes) it is enjoyable to read and makes the ideal book to have in your pocket or handbag. It is also great for quick reference when on call. It has web links and includes surgically relevant anatomy and physiology. It is not as colourful as OHCM, but written with two colours -blue and black. It is a pleasure to read this book, and worth the upgrade if you have an older edition. I strongly recommend it to all junior doctors and medical students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for iMRCS, 26 Nov 2011
Based my MRCS revision on this book and I feel it was a good baseline textbook and more than detailed to encompass most of the clinical sides of the exam. Combined with a physiology textbook and anatomy textbook this book will provide an ample companion to exam revision.
