Found this book to be easy to follow and matched up with all the landmarks. Liked that you could plan how far you could travel each day as distances, locks and time were on each page. Found it invaluable!

for the first time in many many years we shall be taking our 2010 holiday right here in the U.K. We decided to book a canal boat holiday, something we have threatened to do for a long time. Knowing absolutely nothing about canal boating I decided to purchase the pearsons guide which most of the boat operators recommend. I would suggest any first timer should purchase this guide, indeed, I doubt if anyone could consider a canal boat experience without the help of a pearsons guide book.

Nicholsons guides may have the edge on maps and information, but these are better for ther idiosyncratic text. Rather more homespun than the former, but then these are canals we're talking about here.
If you have the cash, get both.
