"The perfect book to put beside the bed of a timorous guest you wish would go home."--The Economist
--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

The Gothic tale has been with us for over two hundred years, but this collection is the first to illustrate the continuing strength of this special fictional tradition from its origins in the late eighteenth century. Gothic fiction is generally identified from Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto and the works of Ann Radcliffe, and with heroes and heroines menaced by feudal villains amid crumbling ruins. While the repertoire of claustrophobic settings, gloomy themes, and threatening atmosphere established the Gothic genre, later writers from Poe onwards achieved an ever greater sophistication, and a shift in emphasis from cruelty to decadence. Modern Gothic is distinguished by its imaginative variety of voice, from the chilling depiction of a disordered mind to the sinister suggestion of vampirism. This anthology brings together the work of writers such as Le Fanu, Hawthorne, Hardy, Faulkner, and Borges with their earliest literary forebears, and emphasizes the central role of women writers from Anna Laetitia Aikin to Isabel Allende and Angela Carter. While the Gothic tale shares some characteristics with the ghost story and tales of horror and fantasy, the present volume triumphantly celebrates the distinctive features that define this powerful and unsettling literary form.

Format:Paperback
Gothic stories are still very popular today and this anthology does a great job of presenting a selection of the most important ones from the 18th century to the present day. There are many famous names, Poe, Lovecraft, Stevenson, Le Fanu, etc. but also little know ones, for example Frederick Cowles, Isaac Crookenden and George Washington Cable. It can be read from cover to cover or you can choose a story according to how much time you have or whether you are in the mood for an early gothic tale or a more contemporary one. The stories are conveniently arranged in chronological order, and the introduction and notes by Chris Baldick are very informative. A book to treasure!

A Good Book. 30 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a very good book. The layout is well structured and clear, the font is nice, and it provides an excellent introduction to many, many authors of Gothic Literature, and will allow any fan of this genre access to previously unheard of writers. I was especially pleased to see H.P. Lovecraft included. However, one tiny niggle I have with this book is that the spine seems faded and discoloured by the sunlight. Otherwise, an excellent book. Recommended.

Not What I Expected 19 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I rate this book as a 1-star only because the blurb given in description seemed to peg the book as containing some element of literary analysis which is what I am currently in need of. When it arrived it was simply a collection of tales...I'm sure the tales themselves are good but I feel a little misled.
