Product Description

Product Description

This new edition of the Oxford French Minidictionary offers up-to-date coverage of all the essential day-to-day vocabulary with over 40,000 words and phrases, and 60,000 translations. The latest words in each language have been added, reflecting all aspects of life today - boy band, google, identity theft, heritage tourism, speed dating. New cultural notes give the essential background to life in the French-speaking world. Other key features include warning symbols to identify slang and informal language, and special help with finding the correct translation of frequently used words, which are difficult to translate, because they appear in so many different contexts - words like can, do, have, and be. A new menu-reader section has been added so you know exactly what you're getting to eat, and the acclaimed phrasefinder gives you superfast access to all the words and expressions you need for everyday situations - shopping, travelling, asking for directions, or finding a place to stay. Finally, the conversion charts for distance, weights and measures, and clothing and shoe sizes make travelling abroad easier than ever before. All of these features are packed into a pocket-sized, durable format, and, with a brand-new text design and layout, this dictionary is more accessible and easy to use than ever before. Ideal for general users, business people, holiday makers, and travellers, the Oxford French Minidictionary is your perfect mini-guide to French.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal travel companion & quick reference, 5 Jul 2007
Mini-dictionaries are strange beasts, likely too many words for the average traveller, but not usually enough for more than the most beginning student. This one however includes not only useful and modern phrases for the traveller, set out side by side so you or your puzzled French person can point and smile at the relevant bit, but also handy menu items and phrases about exchanging email addresses.

Its ultra-modern and up to date with the latest slang, making it perfect for double checking unexpected words in newspapers, magazines and recent novels, and is small enough to slip easily into a pocket or bag to carry around. The text is clear, the translations succint and there are handy box-outs with background information about particularly French establishments where a word for word translation would leave you clueless. With verb tables at the back and many pointers and grammatical niggles mentioned in the main entries, there's an awful lot of useful stuff crammed into a very small space.

Ideal little companion for home, work or on the move, I was most impressed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 19 Nov 2008
By Steve (Cheltenham UK) - See all my reviews
I havent used my french for some years and recently decided to start picking it up again. So I bought all the harry potter books in french, and used an old pocket Collins Gem Dictionary. Onto the third book some of the pages started to come loose from the dictionary and since I have it for a good part of 10 years thought it was high time to replace it. Since I'm using it for reading I wanted something small like my Collins so I can hold both at once and still read.

After buying an Oxford mini dictionary I had a quick comparison with the Collins and I was initially impressed, the Oxford was slightly bigger but included phrases, grammar and irregular verbs etc. Another plus point would be that the writing is larger and far easier to read and the layout seems good.

However my issue with the dictionary came when putting it to use, the vocabulary simply isn't in there. Despite my old Collins being smaller i'm continually reverting back to it to find words.
These 'extras' such as conversions, verb tables and phrases, and the larger writing would be useful if it were not put in at the cost of the vocabulary. This should be a dictionary first and foremost, with extras being extra. I'll be out to buy a new version of the pocket collins Gem!
