Product Description

Product Description

The Oxford English Dictionary is the internationally recognized authority on the English Language, defining more than 500,000 words and tracing their usage through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of literary and other sources. The text on the CD-ROM comprises the full text of the OED 2nd Edition, plus the three Additions volumes, as well as 7,000 new entries from the OED's continuing research. Most importantly, OED v4.0 on CD-ROM boasts superb search-and-retrieval software, designed specifically for the electronic version, enabling you to investigate the Dictionary in ways not possible with the print edition. Questions which might have taken years of patient research can now be answered in seconds. Existing functionality retained from earlier versions includes: BL Installation to the hard drive, so the CD is not required during use of the Dictionary; BL Options to customize the entry display and show or hide pronunciations, spellings, etymology, and quotation text; BL Flexible full text search options, with search filters and an option to rank entries and search results alphabetically or by date. New to this version: BL Now available to Mac users; BL Flash-base; BL Smoother and faster performance providing instantaneous search results; BL New word-wheel which supports incremental letter-by-letter browsing; BL 7,000 new words and meanings; Windows upgrades available to registered users of Versions 2.0 upwards. The complete OED is a stunning piece of work. Its conversion into digital form at a relatively reasonable price puts into everyone's hands a tool of unrivalled power with which to explore and expand our knowledge of the language. To be able to jump from one entry to another so easily gives it the flexibility it has always lacked. And digitisation will allow updates to be added as often as needed. The combination of the finest and most thoroughly researched erudition with complete accessibility makes this a must-have product. All congratulations to OUP for bringing it to market in such a usable form.

Good performance 26 July 2009
Format:CD-ROM
Oxford English Dictionary Second Edition on CD-ROM (version four). I have not encountered any problems using this version of the software in standard user mode on the Microsoft Vista operating system. The ability to operate software in standard user mode is an important improvement on version three, given the problems an Amazon customer reported with version three. Software is easy to use. It is easy to enable and disable pronunciation, spelling, etymology, and quotation.
You only need to authenticate the software the first time it is used. You may receive the message "unable to authenticate original disk within the time limit", but just keep trying until authentication is completed.

interface fail 27 July 2010
Format:CD-ROM
The OED CD-ROM is the best way to use the OED if you can't piggyback on an institutional subscription to OED Online: it has everything the great book has in print form, but adds instant searching and copypasting.

I'm doing this review, however, to point out a bizarre weakness: the interface. It's like OUP invested as little as possible in this outrageous violet throwback. If it had to be ugly, did it have to be -this- ugly?

Netbook users note that the program runs slowly with Intel Atom chips, given the 2Ghz recommended spec.
