3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate 5 July 2008
Format:Hardcover
Actually i have an Arabic mother tongue and an excellent command of English language. I also am a translator from and into English. I have used this book in my translations and my opinion of it is a good one actually. It seems to understand that Arabic language is complex and a certain English verb may not be translated directly into Arabic all the time, and it gives adequate and good formal Arabic. However, i found it not to include all words that can be found in English books, it seems to give the words commonly used and a little bit more. Moreover, it is well arranged. But it is not very professional and does not have pronunciation marks or transliterations (the way an Arabic word is pronounced) for English users.

If you are still yet to learn Arabic, this book is not good for you because it will get you a bit confused.

5.0 out of 5 stars arabic learners essential 4 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover
The dictionary is a must have for all learners of arabic both for those studying Modern and Classical arabic. It is very user friendly and has a huge range of whole translated phrases and idioms.

I would definitely recommend it for the serious student.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very clear and legible Arabic typeface 27 Nov 2003
By Richard Arant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Still a beginning student not yet qualified to comment on many aspects of this dictionary, I am however very pleased with the large, clear, easy-on-the-eyes Arabic font in this full-size edition. I steered away from the smaller formatted and much cheaper edition for fear that as a new reader I would not be able to make out the intricate script. [Years ago as a student of Khmer, another fairly intricate writing system, I first found myself reading documents with a magnifying glass, but once I reached a more advanced level everything seemed clear enough. I imagine it takes most students a while to adjust to what at first seems to be very strange and tiny scribbles.] Most Arabic entries seem fully voweled, so I do not see the need for the English phonetics that another reviewer demanded. I used the "Fun with Arabic" CD-ROM to get past the phonetics. I'm pleased at what I got for my money. I also followed another reviewer's suggestion and ordered the Al Mawrid dictionary as well. If you are going to put in the huge amount of time required to learn a foreign language, you'd best invest early in the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the idiot who gave one star 3 Feb 2008
By Sum Gi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
To the person who left one star: you're an idiot. Why are you using a dictionary if you can't even read both languages?
This dictionary is very useful for English speakers who are serious students of Arabic. It makes distinctions between words that are homonyms in English which can be a major point of confusion in translation during one's early studies (for instance, do you mean rail as in to complain or what the choo-choo rides on?).
This dictionary also contains some idiomatic usage which will help those who are trying to string thoughts together with a little flare.
Of course for Arabic-English, Hans-Weir will always be the golden standard for students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best English-Arabic Dictionary Out There 31 Oct 2013
By Stefan Castino - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Don't even bother with Al-Mawrid. This is the best dictionary out there, especially if you liked the Concise version, also published by Oxford. The typography is clear and precise, and this dictionary has yet to steer me wrong in meaning or translation. Though Hans Wehr is more useful for Arabic-English translations, this is definitely the gold standard in the other direction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could be better 1 April 2011
By Epictetus (Hong Kong) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
There is not much choice of English - Arabic dictionaries. This one is good, and unlike many the Arabic text is very clear and legible. However, it does tend to omit the plurals in Arabic. e.g. it does not show the Arabic plural of the English word "door." Nor does it give the Arabic root of the word. Given the high price of this dictionary, these shortcomings are irritating. It would be good if the publisher would provide rather more value for money in the next edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review on "The Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage" 4 Feb 2009
By Da Da Mu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I received a copy of the first edition (1972). It's not appropriate to call an edition something "of Current Usage" if it is already 37 years old.
