I recommend all learners of English to learn the phonetic symbols and then use that knowledge to help with pronunciation. The 44 internationally recognised symbols plus 2 others are written at the bottom of nearly every page with an example word under each symbol. The majority of the example words are one syllable and words that are in frequent use so they are very easy to learn. The symbols and words only take up 4 pages so the pronunciation aid is always close to hand.
This dictionary has been replaced by The Oxford Essential Dictionary which does not have the pronunciation aid - what a pity!

This is a really great dictonary. I have used it with students and it helps them to move away from their own dictonaries to their first English - English dictonary. Full of useful pictures too.

An excellent dictionary in content and second hand condition. Ideal for those polishing English as a second language and for school children who want to learn correct English as opposed to contemporary.

Good for ESL students! 23 Nov. 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
As an ESL student, I find this dictionary very useful and valuable - it is often timesaving without being inadequate. This was a great addition to my reference library, I now intend to purchase another copy for work and another one for my mother. Thanks OUP and staff!

I bought this book used for my seventh grade son. It is a very good book, specially for the kids that are learning how to write English essays and papers.

Easy to use for foreign language students and kids. Very clear and easy definitions. Not very comprehensive, but that is of course not its purpose.
