Review

"The perfect adjunct to any textbook of clinical medicine. In the months before finals it is as essential as the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine

Oxford Cases is clearly presented and helpful for young doctors learning about diagnosis. Diagnosis is often a skill that new doctors find difficult. This well designed and logically organised book describes diagnostic reasoning in the assessment of patients presenting with 29 common symptoms, from headache to leg ulcer. As a GP who graduated in 1977 I also found the book helpful in reviewing my knowledge and learning about modern practical medicine. Dr Stephenson, King's College School of Medicine, and member of The Richard Asher Prize judging panel

This book is not like the other boring textbooks out there, and really entices the readers to think and challenge themselves. This book has improved my history taking skills 10-fold. All my friends want to know what my secret is! Kamalpreet Singh Cheema, 4th year media at Leicester Medical School

It basically mirrors bedside learning on the wards and is a fantastic tool, whether you are preparing for Phase 1 OSCEs, starting clinic rotation or preparing for your finals. The Murmur, The Brighton and Sussex Medical School Student Newspaper

Very useful book! I find the format very good as it covers all the common presenting symptoms. For each symptom, it covers all the main differential diagnosis followed by what to look out for in the examination, what investigations to do and a bit about each main differential. It makes learning more fun and realistic as the diseases are covered by short cases and there is a very useful section at the back of each symptom which covers viva questions. One regret is that I wish I had this book earlier on as it would have saved me a lot of time to learn a particular topic! I feel that this is an excellent book to build a strong foundation in general medicine and surgery and it makes both learning and revision a lot easier. Definitely worth getting and recommending to all my friends!

Excellent textbook 30 Oct 2010

I'm at Oxford currently preparing for finals in medicine and surgery. I recently bought this following a recommendation from a friend and I have found it very useful. I think the symptom-based approach, i.e. chapters based around a topic like 'shortness of breath', forces you to think diagnostically and so is especially useful for consolidating lots of disparate bits of knowledge. Having said this, it would also have been of great benefit at the start of clinical school when I was looking for a framework with which to approach the common problems. The chapters succeed in logically taking you through from history to examination to investigation interpretation and management options while forcing critical analysis of the case at each stage. The 'viva' pages really bring to the fore key points which you may otherwise have glossed over.

All in all, a valuable addition to any student's library, complementing the many established reference texts.

3 weeks before my medical finals, having seen small case-style books I decided to hunt for the best case-book out there. Having seen the positive feedback on this book I ordered it and was somewhat surprised at the size - ~550 pages - when it arrived. Initially slightly deflated at such a challenge with so little time till my finals, I read the first chapter and was instantly hooked!

The flowing style and and realistic yet logical progression of each case makes more highly compelling reading - with lots of learning points (both theoretical and practically focused). The breadth and depth of the book is very good, with minor omissions (perhaps a chapter on palpitations for completeness?). As a medical finalist there were many examination points to learn from ("what would you find on examination") and these were presented in such a clear layout, with frequent use of flow charts and treatment algorithms to bring together the many disparate chunks of knowledge accumulated during months of finals revision! The frequent overlap of chapters served further to reinforce core ideas and highlight the inter-relatedness between different signs and symptoms. The use of different investigations is covered well. In the end I managed to get through the whole book in a week - definitely well spent!

Summary: a refreshing approach not seen elsewhere in other texts. Comprehensive yet focused with the key learning points and questions the junior clinician needs to answer. Use to develop independent diagnostic skills and clinical reasoning.

Good revision book for covering common presentations. Some nice viva questions in each section. Could do with some more pictures.

easy to read but superficial at times and junior in tone.
Its a nicely bound book with good paper quality, diagrams but a paucity of apposite photos. The text is entertaining to read as the main case unfolds and the 'short cases'... Read more

This book is so good!
This book is well worth adding to your collection. The viva questions cover exactly the things the doctors/surgeons ask you on the wards! It's all really well explained. Buy it!

Buy this to learn to diagnose, not just a book of lists for rote...
This book is different from most others of its type in that it examines the diagnostic process from a learner's point of view, rather than a teacher's. Read more
