Product Description

Review
"Add this volume to your library for a varied but splendid portrait of Ireland through the eyes and words of great literary figures...another masterpiece both in content and presentation."--Naples Daily
"Good for pleasure reading.... Recommended for public libraries."--Library Journal
"This is the kind of anthology that is fun to pull out when you need an erudite Irish fix."--The Irish American Post

Product Description
Ireland is a country that arouses strong opinions - everyone has a view on its character, its foibles, its charms and its waywardness. It has inspired some of the best poetry and nurtured some of the best writers in the world, and in this book, poets, novelists, artists, dramatists, historians, philosophers, peasants and aristocrats are brought together to celebrate and commemorate the nation and its people. Irish history lives more in the present than that of other countries, and there are constant reminders in these pages of past triumphs and tragedies, and their continuing impact on the national psyche. Conquest, famine, emigration, the decline of the language, the struggle for identity and independence are all charted here with a raw and passionate immediacy. Interwoven with episodes of national turbulence are lyrical sections on the Irish landscape and countryside, on the cities and the suburbs, the climate and the folk culture: high jinks and convivially alongside reminiscence and disputation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even the jacket is perfect., 30 Jan 2008
This is an anthology to cherish, if the island of Ireland means anything to you.

You have a brief description of the text, and the synopsis indicates the broad range of cultural and social exposition from a diverse group of commentators. What can't be apparent until the book is in your hands, is the sheer hypnotic effect it can have on you. One moment, you are living and breathing the Dublin of 1940 through Sean O'Faolain; the next, it's the turn of one Mrs.Craik to offer, in 1880, anecdotal evidence of the feuds that existed between landlord and tenant. Woven throughout is poetry from Patrick Kavanagh and Derek Mahon, Joseph Campbell and Louis MacNeice. Exquisite.

Nothing that I can say about this collection will do it justice; but when it is in your hands, be prepared for time to stand still. Hours will pass by as you inhabit several eras, many lifetimes and one glorious enigmatic landscape. Own it, and never let it go.
