Product Description

Product Description

This two-volume anthology celebrates four centuries of English poetry, from the Elizabethan era to the present day. This, the second of the two volumes, covers poets from Blake to Heaney, and provides an excellent portrayal of a wide variety of eighteenth to twentieth century poets. The richness and variety of this tradition are represented in this collection by all the great and familiar names, but also some of the less well-known poets who have often provided startling exceptions to the poetry of their age. The result is a rich and multi-coloured tapestry of the depth, diversity, and energy of poetry written in Britain and Ireland. Beginning with William Blake, this second volume, covers many of the Romantic poets (Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keates). It gives a generous survey of nineteenth century verse, including that of Tennyson, Browning, Hopkins, and Lewis Carroll, with poets from the twentieth-century being represented by poets such as Graves, Betjeman, Larking, Hughes, and Heaney.

Disappointing Quality 12 Jan 2012

Format:Paperback
The content of this book is good, but the quality of paper is very poor and the print size much too small for comfortable appreciation of the poems.

I ordered both volumes of this anthology, keen to boost the prestige of my bookshelves as an English teacher. This is truly an excellent book - it contains all of the key poems of the past three hundred years and the quality is extremely high. There are well-known poems such as Blake's 'A Poison Tree'; Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan'; and Shelley's 'Ozymandias', as well as slightly lesser known (to newcomers to poetry, at least) works like Hood's 'The Bridge of Sighs' and Betjeman's 'Death in Leamington'. You can see the spread of poets and eras spanned by this anthology, and there really is everything in between.

A very overused term when purchasing books is 'a worthy addition to any bookshelf'. This however would not do justice to this fine book: it is simply a must have item for newcomers to poetry and afficionados alike. I purchase lot of books and I teach poetry so I know of what I speak. Buy at any cost.

Not being a poetry fanatic, I sought a volume that would include both familiar poems and compositions that were new to me. I found this collection, covering the period from the Elizabethan to the present day, to be an excellent addition to my library. Poems are arranged by author date and this is the second of a two-part anthology edited by John Wain.
