4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd known, 8 Aug 2005
By A Customer
I didn't get into Oxford and after seeing this book, brought home by my younger brother, I finally understood why. Although my school had encouraged me to apply, nobody there had really explained the point of this. As a result, I walked into the interview cold, having not bothered with any preparation. I was hoping that my cleverness would just somehow shine through and, if it didn't, there were lots of other universities.

The result was a bit of a disaster. The college I had randomly picked felt pretty intimidating. I also found the interview questions odd and could not remember enough relevant stuff to sound impressive. I've done a year at another "good" university now, but when I visit friends who made it into Oxford I still feel envious. They they are studying in a far more exciting place.

I certainly would have tried harder to get in, had I been given proper advice and this is what Oxbridge Entrance does. It covers everything you need to know about the admissions process, course choice, college life, teaching methods and careers prospects. The problem of interview nerves is addressed. There are interesting anecdotes and some quite funny jokes. The book even tells you what to do next in case you are rejected. If you are applying to Oxford or Cambridge, make sure you read it first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read and prepare, 11 Sep 2007
Some people still regard an Oxbridge place almost as their birthright and this book seems to have made them very nervous. Pallis explicitly tries to show students how to develop and display their subject knowledge, no matter what school they attend. The book then focuses on the psychological barriers because confidence, hard work and clever choices are described as the corner stones of a good application. Having tutored A-level students in my undergraduate days, I'm inclined to agree.

Despite all those reassuring words in the Oxford or Cambridge prospectus, it's also important to be prepared. Preparation especially matters when it comes to the Oxbridge interview, conducted in an academic language that is unfamiliar to many students; unprepared candidates can get flustered and find it hard to grasp what kind of answers are expected of them. Unfortunately, even the most well-meaning admissions tutors are not IQ experts. A gifted, spontaneous student may therefore be rejected, while a carefully prepared but more middling one is offered a place (ask any teacher). This is why top schools with strong Oxbridge links focus so much on interview advice. If you are not lucky enough to be taught at any of those, buy Oxbridge Entrance instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last minute help, 19 Oct 2007
My Leeds school was pretty keen to get people in the top stream into Oxbridge but my new one in London is not. The teachers here are happy as long as you aim for some university. So, I had pretty much given up on the idea of Oxford when I came across this terrific book. Without it, I would never have applied. I raced through it in three nights and have no regrets. Although I only filled in the form at the very last moment, I felt confident that I had done the right subject research to give me an edge (actually, my whole idea of research came from the book). After telling some fascinating Oxbridge tales, the author makes you focus on the academic side, so you aren't put off by things like the black gowns. She's also on the side of the comprehensives, I thought, because she says that more of their students should be getting in. In case you get rejected, there's even a chapter on what to do next. Anyone who tells you to stay away from this book is probably at public school.
