This is the second book in a new trilogy, Owlflight being the first, this is Valdemar from a different angle, the Hawkbrothers one. Mercedes Lackey draws you in from the first page and leaves you hoping that the next book is published (there's nothing worse than having to wait a year or more for the next instalment). I love the Valdemar books and found the Hawkbrothers slightly mysterious in the previous books, this one expands on the relationships with their 'bondbirds', and about how they live, work and protect the forests they live in great, great, great more please. Darian (our hero) is endearing a 'typical boy' and is a bit irritating at first, but stay with him, he's worth it. Full of the usual adventure and magic this trilogy will not disappoint (the heralds are here too). Darians journey into adulthood and magehood was great, but I found the ending a little rushed. My only question is when will there be some more Valdemar books.
