By The Wolf TOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 4 Aug. 2014
Format: Audio CD
Away from the fold of Frightened Rabbit Scott Hutchinson is making
some very interesting music of his own as this self-titled debut shows.

There's a rattling rough and ready energy running through the upbeat
numbers such as the delightfully odd opening track 'Cold Creeps' and the
rumbustious and reverb-laden 'Two', with its uplifting chorus but there
are moments of great delicacy too. His composition 'Songs About Roses',
in particular, shows off the full colour of his plaintive voice and way with
a good tune; a little bit folksy and with some truly lovely vocal harmonies.
It's a really beautiful thing. 'Los Angeles, Be Kind', too, weaves a melancholy
personal narrative into the seams of a touching full-bodied epic ballad.
If you're looking to rip up the rug, however, look no further than 'Red Hand',
where Mr Hutchinson seems to have tapped just a little into the spirit of
R.E.M.'s 'Out Of Time' (1991) and come back with a memorably jangly gem.

There's light and shade and highs and lows here in abundance.
Owl John's very impressive first solo showing is an absolute hoot!

Highly Recommended.

Really good album. Some stronger songs and some not so strong songs, but overall the album works really well. Sounds similar to Frightened Rabbit (as it would), but with some more synth sounds here and there. Reminds me of FR's first two albums, in a way. But yeah, it's definitely worth a listen. :)
