absolutely fantastic 26 Jun 2009
An absolutely fantastic device that will certainly save you money. I actually ordered the old one (from an amazon reseller) but got this, the new version.

Set up is easy - just clip the plastic detector round the main fusebox wire (there's no wiring to be done) and you're immediately told how much electricity you're using. You can also enter how much you're electicity provider charges you and it tells you how much you're spending at that moment (that's the frightening part) and how much you've spent in the last month / week / day etc.

I'd recommend this rather than just turning everything off as the results are suprising. Some electical items have virtually no effect either on standby or when they're being used. Others (fridges, extractor fans, halogen lights, gas central heating!?!?) have a huge effect.

These really should be fitted in all new homes!

The device is easy to fit - the device clipped easily around the main cable. However when I first connected up it gave strange readings and this seemed to be because the detector was too close to the other cable. I did take a picture but the photo is still on the camera - can add it if anyone interested.
It is not particularly accurate (which is stated in the technical specification) so that when you have all the high energy consuming items stopped then it is probably only capable of detecting energy changes of about 50 watts.
The screen is rather cluttered.
What did I discover?
1. The 800W microwave uses 1500W
2. The "new" low energy bulbs really do consume much less energy
3. Generally old equipment is more inefficient.
4. The new TVs use little electricity when on standby
5. We REALLY do not need a fridge, a freezer and a fridge-freezer
6. Putting on the kettle, toaster, tumble drier and washing machine is bad for your health

I have used it as "research" tool - to find out what we should be doing.
I am going to move it to my daughter's house - it should save her a fortune.

Fabulous 14 Nov 2009
If the government is serious about reducing energy usage in the home, then they should provide one of these monitors for every house.

The only drawback is that you become a little obsessed with how much energy your appliances are sucking out of your bank account, and you are continually going around the house turning things off. You know straight away if the kids have left the lights on in their bedroom, and how much it costs to have a shower.

It's so easy to install - just fit the sensor clip around one of the cables going into your consumer unit, turn on the sender box and the remote monitor, and you're ready to find out how expensive your tumble drier and washing machine are, and more importantly for me start turning lights off (halogens are costing me a fortune in electricity).

I just wanted to know how many kilowatts we're using in real time and how many units of electricity (kilowatts/hour) it's costing us, which this unit does fantastically. You soon find out what appliances are costing you the most money.

Buy one, become obsessed and save some money.
