Wagner for the Collector 13 Jan 2010

I am one of many collectors who leaped for joy at the discovery of this reissue by Australian Decca. This is another in a long line of rare recordings by conductor Ernest Ansermet to be reissued on the budget Eloquence label, and in fact this title featuring Wagner excerpts is making its CD debut. While the devotee will savor these performances, unfortunately these renditions are not for everyone. Herbert von Karajan's accounts with the Berlin Philharmonic cast a wider net in terms of selections, and showcase an orchestra with the chops to play this demanding sonic material (and they played it just as well for Furtwangler, but in mono). Instead this album needs to be examined beside the Wagner collections of other conductors best known for their interpretations of music far removed from this composer -- Wagner CDs by Barbirolli, Boult, Cluytens, and Munch come to mind -- and excitedly explored, almost as a curiousity. But for those whose interest is piqued by hearing a conductor best associated with early 20th century French music and ballets, tap into the height of late 19th century Germanic musical expression, by all means enjoy -- I sure did!

Ansermet is not remembered for his Wagner but this single CD shows that he had an excellent grasp of the music and is a pity he didn't record more of it. The sound is rich and full. Performances have depth and feeling that put any contemporary condustors to shame. Grab this before it disappears!
