Music to be listened to at any time of day - maybe not to be taken too seriously for it is simply a delight and this recording is so beautifully played capturing the essence of Wolf-Ferrari. I remember part of the music from The Jewels of the Madonna being used to introduce a Children's Hour play "Ballet Shoes" - music which has stayed with me all these years. Good to hear it again.

Excellent presentation of fine orchestral music as one would expect from Neville Marriner.

Mildly engaging, but Wolf-Ferrari does not really work in less than outstanding performances 25 April 2011

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's operas have fared remarkably well on disc in the sense that many of them are available. Unfortunately, Wolf-Ferrari's airy, eiderdown-light, classical textures and play with light and shade require first-rate performances in order not to sound utterly dull, and few of the releases available provide anything even close. His instrumental music (in particular orchestral excerpts from operas) is rather easy to find as well, but again first-rate performances are required for the music to sustain any interest at all. One would think that the disc at hand should fit the bill. Unfortunately things are not really that easy.

The operas from which the excerpts are taken represent slightly (but not overly) different sides of the composer. I Quattro rusteghi and Il Segreto di Susanna are both comic operas (the former based on a Goldoni play) and relatively early; Il campiello is a Goldoni comedy as well, but from later in the composer's career (though the style is only barely noticeably different). L'amore medico is a Molière comedy and La dama boba a Lope de Vega comedy. All of them are elegant and gallant, tuneful in a kind of rustic, airy manner. I gioielli della Madonna, however, is Wolf-Ferrari's take on verismo (to some but not uniform success); in style, however, the excerpts here don't suggest much beyond the simple, innocent, glittering charms of the comedies - pulling the corners of the smiles somewhat down don't suffice for profundity.

Now, Wolf-Ferrari was probably at his strongest when writing for voices, and the disc at hand does as such maybe not make the best case for him, yet the grazioso buffa style of most of these pieces are certainly attractive when taken one at a time; lightly lilting, smiling and coquettish - but with no punch, momentum or depth whatsoever. The longest items (such as the overture to La dama boba) outstay their welcome, but this is otherwise a nice collection of rather airy but very sweet candy. It is not entirely unvariegated, but the variations occur within a relatively limited range, and the more ebullient music furthermore sounds as if it found the composer slightly out of water.

The performances are accomplished and spirited but not outstanding. And therein lies the hitch, for as mentioned at the outset Wolf-Ferrari's music requires nothing less than outstanding performances to work. If you wish to investigate Wolf-Ferrari's music I recommend going for one of his operas (if you can find any good performances); if you are already a fan, I suppose this disc will provide some diverting moments. It is hardly a must, at least. The sound is a little grey, but decent enough.
Jewels of pure pleasure. 11 Nov. 2014

I have always found the music of Wolf-Ferrari to be filled with sparkling wit, gracious melodies, warmth and humor, with occasional forays into moments of more somber gravitas. Always eminently listenable. As to this recording, I feel that both the the performance and the recording serve the music well. When I am in the mood for something a bit lighter, though not to my ear in any way superficial, I turn to this album. It is an absolute delight, of which I never tire.

The music of Wolf Ferrari is totally new to me, I heard the Jewels of the Madonna on Classic FM and bought the cd. Surprise, surprise, I thought it was going to be very modern but not. I could clearly hear the suggestions to the far east, the girls dancing with their harem outfits!
