If the rest of 'Framing Armageddon'is as good as this, then there's no doubt that it'll be Metal album of the year 2007! That's right, even better than Machine Head's 'The Blackening'!!
'Ten Thousand Strong' kicks straight in with a fast, HEAVY riff and Ripper Owens's producing one long scream. It kicks you in the nuts and straps you in tight from the first second! This song is typical Iced Earth, in the same formulae as past single 'The Reckoning' (although better!) and has one of the catchiest chorus's in Iced Earth history!
Then comes the re-recorded 'Something Wicked' trilogy. And yes, it's a very different sounding trilogy, but believe me it's just as good in it's own right. It's a heavier, darker and more evil sounding trilogy, and Jon Shaffer did a stunning job in making it different but keeping the glory of the original. Brent Smedley's drumming get's 10/10 as through-out his double-bass work doubles up with Shaffer's intense rhythm, highlighting the alternate picking of the riffs. Tim Mills did a nice job on the solos too, with not much different from the originals.
And finally, always the talking point, how does Tim 'Ripper' Owens compare to Matt Barlow? Yes we're all sad that Matt left but he did, and time's moved on. Ripper is a fantastic singer (would he have got the Judas Priest job AND Iced Earth job if he wasn't?? Answer: NO!) and he proves here why he is so important to the scene. Sure, Barlow has better emotion in his voice, but Ripper has greater power. On all four songs Ripper does a stunning job with the vocals.
If you're going to compare the re-recorded with the original note for note then the chances are you wont like it. STOP BEING SO PATHETIC. It's very different but just as good. I love both versions. Both versions beat the hell outta everything being produced by the likes of Trivium and Bullet for my Valentine etc.
Listen to this CD as it's own and you will be blown away. I got it this afternoon and have already listened to it way into the double figures.
