Ngaio Marsh never fails to produce a page-turner, and Overture to Death is as good as any of her works. Many of the characters walk the tightroap between being believable and being farcical, and on every page, information is casually included which turns out to be relevant to the killer's identity. A first-class read for anyone who loves classic whodunnits.

I started to reread the inspector alleyn series of books, what a joy to find well thought plots, good use of language, well formed and rounded characters and I intend to go through the rest of the series.

Possibly the most tedious, boring book I have ever read. With cliched characters, who we feel nothing for, cliched settings (mansions, the churchyard et al) and a rather dull detective most people will have the mystery solved within the first few chapters.
Don't waste your time and energy reading this dire novel.
