BBC Review

Following 11 years with Moloko and the Ruby Blue arty solo album with electronica producer, Matthew Herbert, in 2005... Roisin finally returns to the dancefloor. Overpowered is a much more accesible album and the lady herself co-wrote and co-produced, delving back to the fray with her ice-cool vocals and dark, funky, lyrical hedonism.

From the sleezy pop opener, "Overpowered", you know you're in for a treat. It's a heady electronic anthem which tells the tale of getting consumed by the lust for an ex-lover, complete with a squelchy bassline and the minimalism of Casio kickdrums which are all secretly lifted by gentle harp and spacey synths. It's an irresistible match of loved-up disco pop which has a crafty reworking of TIGA's "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night", immediately making it a new classic.

A swag bag full of soulful dance genius has been tapped on this album, with touches of Andy Cato's (Groove Armada) tweaking present in the 80s sound-clapping, "You Know Me Better" and "Let Me Know". The beauty in these tracks is that no one's too trigger happy on the production, thus leaving Roisin's crystalline voice to reign unchallenged.

Jealous beau's are tackled on "Checkin' On Me", where a heavy tribal-like Seiji rhythm dominates. Aside from the love/relationship/ fame game tunes, Roisin takes a punch at global warming in "Dear Miami": 'Dear Miami/ You're the first to go/Disappearing under melting snow'. At the end of the journey, "Scarlet Ribbons" undresses you with it's last dance/end of the night cool lament to the ties between parent and child when their baby grows up.

From start to finish Roisin fronts an inventive, unpredictable record. Overpowered spits glitter with every song and could go a long way to bringing back a disco chic revival. --Sonja D'Cruze

Album Description

`Overpowered' is the second album from Róisín Murphy, formerly of Moloko. A heady mix of electronic dance anthems, soul-stirring pop songs, deep, dark funk and quirky lyrical genius, `Overpowered' is a thrilling and contemporary marriage of edgy pop and irresistible disco.

Róisín co-wrote and co-produced the entire album, bringing her own vision and focus to these songs whilst working with a variety of producers, writers and mixers to create what is without doubt her finest record; unpredictable, creative, inventive, exciting and hugely accessible.

Working with the likes of Seiji, Andy Cato (Groove Armada), Jimmy Douglass, Ill Factor, and Parrot & Dean, Róisín has brought her love of the dance floor right to the very heart of the album. `Overpowered' is the place where pop meets dance and gives birth to a glitter-drenched masterpiece. This is one of the albums of the year - a breathtaking modern classic.

This is one of the most perfect CD's ever crafted. It deserved to sell millions of copies but due to financial problems at EMI it was never even released in the U.S. but still sold 20,000 copies. Fortunately is was released in the U.K and I bought 2 copies from Amazon.
Perfect pop songs such as Let Me Know and You Know Me Better co-written with Andy Cato of Groove Armada make it worth buying. But other tracks are often different and somewhat avant garde such as Primitive and Parallel Lives. There are also a slew of B-sides and bonus tracks recorded during the Overpowered sessions that are equally amazing such as Unlovable,Sunshine and Bryan Ferry's Slave To Love. I bought all the CD singles and maxi singles to get these tracks. The hard to find track Off and On is also quite exceptional and has been remixed and re-recorded for Sophie Ellis Bextor's upcoming CD Straight to The Heart. If you have only a limited CD budget include this CD, it is worth every penny.

Stunning 9 Jan 2011
Format:MP3 Download
This takes moloko, makes it slighlty more melodic in places and the beat starts. With Roision's voice over the top this album is great.

Actually, comparing Overpowered to Roisin's solo début, Ruby Blue, is a bit like comparing Moloko's polished, masterful Statues to the quirkier, more hit-and-miss Things To Make And Do - they are different projects and will appeal to different listeners in different ways.
I don't think this is her two fingers to those who ignored Ruby Blue (how many copies of Statues were sold, after all), but just the direction she wanted to go in, this time. Interesting that in interviews Roisin describes how Overpowered was "made in a pop way", rather than a "pop album," because they are mostly not pop songs, lyrically anyway. When they are, as on Let Me Know, they score the kind of direct hit they might have done had Curtis Mantronik worked with Moloko.
In fact, at time of writing, it's hard to fathom why this album isn't burning up the charts yet, considering the strength of the two singles that have already come off it. Other, lyrically diverting songs such as Primitive and Dear Miami really benefit from the slick "pop" treatment, but the one to really propel Overpowered into people's brains could be You Know Me Better, especially with some good mixes - although it's pretty much club-ready as it is. If only the clubs could still "break" an artist through. Oh well.
It's just a shame the two tracks reminiscent of Goldfrapp - Movie Star and Cry Baby - don't pursue a less marketable, and over-marketed, sound. But these are small quibbles - it still stuffs the creatively-blocked likes of Gwen Stefani. Five stars!

I have to say, I wasn't totally impressed by Roisin Murphy's solo debut after Moloko's breakup. It was fun and colourful, but it felt like an experimental palette. Read more
