Product Description

Product Description

Flying to Australia is boring, especially if you think of all the fascinating countries you are bypassing - that are out of sight below the clouds. Like millions of others I’ve flown to Australia, and been bored stiff, but this time I’m going overland by train.

I was able to connect up with a whole series of trains, which took me virtually all the way from London to Sydney. It’s not an artificial TV adventure trip with a dozen hidden fixers, nor am I doing mad antics, dangerous pastimes or piggy backing on some fund raising scam. This is an everyman story that anyone could do and is the most brilliant way to travel. I could potentially have done it in 3 weeks but I spent 3 months stopping off wherever I felt like it.

Starting from London my route crossed Europe into Russia, east across Siberia, south through Mongolia and into China. From Beijing I trained it to Hanoi and then took the Reunification Express to Saigon, with a few stops on the way. I followed the Mekong north through Cambodia, onwards to Bangkok in Thailand and down the Malay Peninsula to Singapore. My only flight was from Singapore to Darwin and then it was trains all the way to Sydney and Perth.

More About the Author

I've been a jobbing travel writer for the past 15 years and write for newspapers, magazines and the internet in the UK, USA and Australia - www.peter-lynch.co.uk

A biology degree, teaching and leading field trips in my younger days left an indelible imprint on my psyche so that writing and researching Wildlife & Conservation Volunteering - the complete guide (Bradt, 2012) was a total joy. I'm not that interested in bland wildlife watching trips, I find them too passive and prefer to be more actively involved in field trips.

The second edition has been completely updated and expanded, including more organizations, updated assessments, more volunteer stories and more field adventures. There is also a new chapter on great wildlife migration events - how, when and where to see them, with more great photographs.

For me a conservation volunteering experience is so much more than a wildlife trip or safari, not just for the positive feel-good factor of doing something useful but because of the hands-on involvement and insights they provide into the life of wild creatures.

Jason, a ranger on the deserted island of Curieuse in the Seychelles, told me how when he arrived for work on the morning of 24th December 2004 all the giant tortoises had mysteriously disappeared from their normal beachside habitat. Two days later the tsunami struck but the tortoises had laboriously struggled up onto the islands high ground - behaviour he had never seen before. It seems like scientists are missing a low-tech trick for a tsunami early warning system.

My other passion is for travelling by rail. I've travelled all around Europe by train but my greatest trip was across the planet from London to Sydney. The story about the biggest train trip possible - Around the World by Train, is now available on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real travel adventure.... 28 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Love the no-gimmick approach to this journey as the author writes about his adventure by rail as it is.....a real travel experience. A journey overland that captures a feel for places and people. Its no mean feat to travel half the way round the world (mainly) by rail ......when is the next half of the world book to be published?!

‘In the fine old tradition of purposeless travel for fun and adventure', as Graham Greene might have said. And most of all, an inspirational journey.

I loved the down to earth style of writing and finding out about all the places the writer visited. I would recommend this to anyone considering travelling to Austrailia if they are looking for an alternative and enriched experience.
