I wasn't sure about buying this book, since I'd already spent a lot of money on OA literature, and surely it's all the same stuff in a different package. Isn't it?

Well no! I was really inspired reading this one, even after reading the others. There is just enough history of the founding of the organisation, and even this is a story of somebody's issue with compulsive overeating. I can't tell you how much help it was to me to discover that my strange behaviours over food where not just will power issues, and that I was not alone, but that many, many others share my total inability to control my eating or to eat in a healthy way. After 30 years of yo-yo dieting, I'd gone from 8 1/2 stone to nearly 17; double my starting weight; and to find out that there are real reasons why this happens and why I cannot fix it alone was wonderful, and has been life changing, and weight changing.

I can't thank Overeaters Anonymous enough, and every one of their books has a valid place on my bookshelf, (or my kindle). Each book has something really important to add to my knowledge of how the 'cure' works, or rather ; how I can work the program to get my recovery. Reading other peoples stories is crucial to my understanding of just how diverse this problem is, and why each of us has to find our own road to recovery and abstinence, and the stories give proof of what that road could be. There are no 'rules, only advice which has worked for others, and if one approach doesn't work, or doesn't appeal, try another. You can do it!

I found this book and the collection of stories within it really disappointing. As someone who does not have many meetings near them, I bought it because I thought it would be like listening to other members doing a chair; telling their story and sharing their strength, hope and experience. I felt let down because I didn't really feel I could emotionally connect to the stories very much and some of them seemed to just relate their journey factually; the level of emotional sharing was low. The most disappointing thing about it was that the selection of stories don't seem to accurately represent OA's membership in the present: where were the stories from the anorexics and bulimics? Yes, of course it is possible to relate purely to those who overeat, but there were too many written from that persepctive, I felt.

Well, what can I say. I am a believer of the 12-step philosophy but long story short. By reading these stories you understand more about yourself and the reason some of us overeat. I've read about 4 testimonies so far and just by reading the book (as unfortunately there is no OA group in my city) I've dropped 2 kilos in the last three weeks. By understanding more of your emotions and why you react to food the way you react helps you to be compasionate and good to yourself. Of course I recommend it.
Once I finish reading it I plan to order the Twelve step book and probably the Big book too. I might need to contact someone from OA for guidance as to the best order in which to read the books.

I'd expected a recovery plan/workbook but this was a potted history, personal stories and a little info in the indexes. Not as helpful as I'd hoped
