'This book is indeed a valuable source for those working with women who experience postnatal depression'.

Product Description

Overcoming Postnatal Depression uses the trusted Five Areas model of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), helping people experiencing postnatal depression to change how they feel. The Five Areas model helps the reader make key changes using a clear, pragmatic and accessible style, by examining five important aspects of our lives:

    - Life situation, relationships, resources and problems
    - Altered thinking
    - Altered feelings or moods
    - Altered physical symptoms or sensations
    - Altered behaviour or activity levels

By bringing together specialists in postnatal depression, and with the use of self-help resources, this course addresses all the common challenges faced by women during times of low mood after having a baby. It provides access to the proven CBT approach, helping the reader make positive changes in their life in a planned and achievable way. An additional workbook aimed at friends and relatives describes how they can offer support.

The workbooks also provide an invaluable resource for counsellors, general practitioners, health visitors, nursing staff, midwives, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, self-help groups and other voluntary sector organisations.

A linked and completely free online support course is located at www.livinglifetothefull.com. Additional written, DVD and audio resources are available at www.fiveareas.com.

I bought this book for someone who has been struggling with post natal depression for some time. It is written in a simple and repetitive style and I think it might be hard to motivate someone to work through it all prperly so we just dipped into the bits that felt most relevant and found some really helpful suggestions.

The chapter for friends and family on how to support someone suffering with post natal depression was really valuable to me as I had a tendency to want to take over and do stuff for her which she hated as it made her feel worse about herself.

The chapter towards the end on how post natal depression affects your thoughts was brilliant for us, and after reading it she said 'maybe I really am ill and don't just need to pull myself together', a major breakthrough!

In conclusion this book has been really helpful to us by dipping into the most relevant bits but in my opinion it would be hard work to read it cover to cover and work through it properly as it is so simple and repetitive in style and would annoy anyone who felt irritable!

Slightly Patronising 10 Aug 2010

Format:Paperback
I found this book a little bit patronising. It's very simplistic and it uses some strange language sometimes like the writers are trying to make it friendly and accessible but it feels a bit like your parents saying "Well wicked" or something equally cringesome.
