Product Description

Review

"Addis and Martell are on the cutting edge of research on psychological treatments for depression. Now they have adapted one of the most powerful new psychological treatments for depression into an easy-to-use and convenient workbook that will be of enormous benefit to both individuals suffering from depression and therapists conducting treatment. The authors are the first to make this program generally available to clinicians and the public and, in its straightforward easy to understand format, millions of people should benefit."
--David H. Barlow, Ph.D., professor of psychology and director of clinical programs at Boston University

Product Description

What if depression weren't a disorder occurring on its own but was rather a kind of signpost pointing at tangible things you needed to change in your life? This would radically alter not only the way you think about depression but also the strategies you'd use to overcome it.

Behavioral activation therapy is built on this powerful, insightful assumption. Its techniques offer fast, effective relief from depression by guiding you to make positive and rewarding changes in your life. This simple, profound process reconnects you to the naturally occurring rewards of a well-lived life, which are powerful antidotes to feelings of depression.

The workbook's engaging exercises create a structured framework in which you are encouraged to focus on those activities that will inspire you with feelings of pleasure, mastery, and engagement. Learn to develop a list of enjoyable activities or activities you need to engage in as a part of a normal and satisfying life. Begin with the easiest (or sometimes, the most indispensable) activities on your list, and learn how to tackle them one by one.

"This book has been awarded The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Seal of Merit -- an award bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties. Used alone or in conjunction with therapy, our books offer powerful tools readers can use to jump-start changes in their lives."

best ever! 29 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
IMO clearly the BEST self-help book out there - and believe me, as a life-long sufferer, I've read them all. Starting with David Burns, who left me even more depressed than before - reading hundreds of pages in small print is exactly what you don't need when you've got the blues. Tried the cognitive stuff as well - helped somewhat, but involved too much thinking - which I happen to do too much anyway. Understanding that I am allowed to be "someone who is persuing a goal and choosing, regardless of your mood, to act on it" was absolutely crucial to me. (this phrase alone would have been well worth paying the price of the book). Because this is exactly the thing I've been wondering about forever. Even in the depth of the worst depressive states I always had moments I enjoyed and treasured but I used to feel that I wasn't supposed to have them, that i was kind of obliged to behave true to my depressed mood. No, I can DO things and I might even ENJOY things, not matter how I feel. I just wish this book had been around twenty years ago. Yes, it takes hard work, you have to do your exercises (and I don'T find them easy) and it does involve fear and anxiety, but it's definitely worth it. I highly recomment this book to anybody who has ever suffered from depression - and I believe that a lot of the tasks are very useful even to those who don't. If I could have given ten stars - I certainy would have!

I really liked this book. I'm a clinician working with people with depression and the ideas expressed in this title were easily assimilated and applied in the clinical environment. Though this workbook is much more accessible than previous titles such as Mind Over Mood (Greenberger and Padesky) and Overcoming Depression (Chris Williams), my feeling is that it is a little 'text heavy' to be as accessible as it might be to clients seeking a pure self-help approach. However, that said, I think this is still probably the best place to start if you are depressed and looking for self-help material. This is much more accessible than the texts mentioned above. I would have liked to have seen the ideas distilled even further into less text and perhaps some more of the central ideas expressed in diagrammatic form.

I recommend this book as a must for anyone with depression or severe anxiety which causes avoidance behaviour, such as procrastination and desire to sleep. It will get you going!
