Product Description

Product Description

Many children are naturally shy but extreme shyness and social anxiety can become a major childhood problem, leading to avoidance of school, difficulty in making friends and even developing into social anxiety in adulthood. In "Overcoming Your Child's Shyness and Social Anxiety", child psychologists Lucy Willetts and Cathy Creswell explain how parents can help a shy child learn to challenge their thoughts and behaviour patterns and learn to participate confidently in every aspect of their lives. Based on clinically proven cognitive behavioural principles, the book explains what causes shyness, how to identify social anxiety in your child (sometimes masked by anger or stubbornness) and how to gradually help your child face their anxieties and develop problem-solving strategies. This book is a must for parents, teachers and anyone working with children.

About the Author

I bought this book as a recomendation from a friend, because I was having difficulty with my 6 yr old son who was very shy. I would say this is by far the most useful thing I've read since having both my children now 3 and 6. It is easy to read and the common sence theories are simple but very affective. Since reading the book and applying the advice it has given, my son's confidece has improved massively. He has not only joined a Beavers group but also stood and spoke in front of the group about things he's interested in when before he wouldn't even answer the register in his own class! What a brilliant book I would recomend it to anyone, not only those who need a little guidance with children who are already shy, but helps prevent simple mistakes from being made in the first place.

I have been really pleased with this book not only in the advice that it gives, but also the other books that it recommends for specific issues, such as selective mutism, which can't be covered in detail in the book. My son is at the youngest end of the spectrum for the advice, but the steps and information have been tailored to suit children of different ages, which is probably one of the books most positive points. I would definately recommend it to parents who don't know where to start, but feel the need to address the shyness issue.

Cognitive based 6 May 2010
I have read a lot of cognitive psychology books, so nearly everything in this book I had heard before, thus I didn't even finish reading it. However if you have not read any similar publications before I imagine you would find this very useful.
