Product Description

Product Description

Severe dieting often results in periods of reactive binge eating, a phenomenon experienced by one in twenty American women. Responses to these periods may include prolonged fasting, self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives and diuretics, and obsessive exercise: all symptoms of bulimia.

This workbook contains tools to help bulimics break the cycle of bingeing and reacting, allowing them to take control of their lives and make positive behavior changes. Practical advice and real-life examples reinforce attitudes and offer encouragement. Discover that it is possible to overcome the disorder and live a happier, more fulfilling life.

Through their cutting-edge research at the internationally renown Toronto Hospital Eating Disorders Programme, the authors of The Overcoming Bulimia Workbook have developed a step-by-step program for recovery whose efficacy has been proven in clinical trials. The authors empower bulimia suffers to take control of their lives, not only by providing information and advice, but by giving them a personalized format with which they can put these new behavior changes into practice - a process that is critically important for lasting recovery.

This comprehensive guide covers everything from bulimia's symptoms, causes, and risks to how to normalize eating, shift eating-disordered thoughts, build on personal strengths, improve self-esteem, deal with underlying issues, prevent relapse, and understand what medications can help. With many real-life examples, this book also helps readers learn through the experiences of other sufferers how to overcome their disorder and live a happier, more fulfilled life.

This is the most effective, honest, invaluable and accessible (Bulimia) self help book I have read to this date. The language is friendly, uncomplicated and extremely sympathetic without being patronising. The exercises were particularly well designed, helpful and thought provoking. I found this book to be supportive and caring and recommend it to anyone who might be suffering form this debilitating condition. If you feel trapped in a life-cycle dictated by Bulimia, this book will give you the tools to find your way out.

Added perspective 30 July 2006
Format:Paperback
This book is a hands on work book. It contains various exercises and tasks to help break the cycle of bulimia. By no means a cure, it can certainly help you to stand back from the disorder and see it from a different perspective.

The book helps you to analyse your thoughts, feelings and actions and offers meaningful and practical ways to help.I'm sure many of you know how to overcome the disorder, but actually doing it is a different matter. This book breaks down what you need to do into smaller parts and it explains how you will feel and reassures you that its OK.

Aspects of the book are impossible to digest (pardon the pun) for a long term sufferer. For example, the book encourages you to incorporate 'risky foods' into day to day life. This for me is impossible (but I'm working on it). However exercises such as evaluating your self esteem, challenging your pre-conceptions, as well as techniques for thought management were all very helpful.

I am sure the book would be extremely beneficial for shorter term sufferers, who perhaps do not understand the why's and wherefores, but for those with a longer history with the illness many of the concepts will already have been tried and will already be understood. It can also seem a little patronising in parts.

At the very least, the book has helped me view my illness as simply that. It has taught me that bulimia is not who i am, it is just something I have. After over 17 years with bulimia, giving it this sort of perspective is a major milestone to overcoming it.

The writers of the book also offer comforting reassurance and they obviously understand the cycles, the effects and the thought processes of having bulimia. It is reassuring to know that other people feel the same and that there are people who understand. It was good to be able to identify myself with many of the thoughts, feelings, symptoms and behaviours described in the book. I imagine it would also be a good insight into the illness for the friends and family of sufferers because it explains how the illness affects you both physically and mentally.

The book is not a cure and if you are not ready to face the difficulties of overcoming the illness then don't bother buying it. It is hard to follow the workbook and will require an extreme amount of will power to accept the challenges the book sets out. If you are ready however, i would recommend buying it because i think that everyone would find some parts helpful and inspirational.

Hope it helps.

I've been suffering from bulimia for 12 years. This workbook is helping me finally get control of my illness and my life. The exercises are extremely beneficial for understanding the feelings behind my destructive actions and (more importantly) how to change them. From start to finish this book is packed with useful, informative and best of all, unintimidating tools that are extremely helpful. This book offers insight into the distorted thoughts that accompany eating disorders. By understanding what is going on in your mind, you can learn to change the way you see both yourself and the effects of your eating disorder. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering with an eating disorder or to anyone who knows someone who is. Reading this book truly changed my life, and for the first time in four years I am actually living a healthy and fufilling lifestyle.

Using with my therapist and DBT 6 Jan 2005

Format:Paperback
This book breaks it down and then builds you up on a path to recovery. I use it as part of the things I pick up when I absolutely don't know what to do next and the disease is beating down my door. Very well written. Highly recommended for the bullimic that is ready for recovery.
