Product Description

Review

'Fairburn's broad, popular text... provides a concise discussion on related research, information and methods for controlling the behavior of food bingers. The author has managed to intermix all the key issues throughout the text, thus providing consistent and relevant information.' - John Thain, Nursing Standrard, August 2005

'This book is exceptional and can be used as a form of treatment, to bolster treatment, or to teach professionals about those who struggle with binge eating problems. Clearly this book is the culmination of Dr. Fairburn's years of Center for Eating and Weight Disorders' - Denise E. Wifley, PhD., Co-Director, Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Saver, 18 Dec 2003
I read this book after suffering from various ED's for over 11 years. Having been through the system with no great success I had pretty much given up. This book saved my life. Reading Dr Fairburns words took away so many feelings of lonliness and isolation, this guy really knows his stuff. I would say this book is a must for anyone suffering from Eating Disorders or merely fighting the diet cycle. I have completed the self help section of this book and am now well on the road to recovery. I keep this book with me at all times. If you have an ED, please read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensible advice that works, 27 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I bought this book in desperation when I was completely unable to control my eating. A month later I am (usually!) eating 3 regular meals and 3 small snacks a day.

I was impressed that what is in the book is based on real research. The author doesn't make any miraculous claims but is realistic about what is achievable.

The programme Fairburn sets out is easy to understand and starts small eg just record what you're eating & how you're feeling, then progresses so over time you learn how to deal with the urge to binge.

I think one of the other reviews says this is a 12 step programme - this makes it sound like Overeaters Anonymous, which is misleading. The author does not recommend abstaining from any specific foods, and the steps are not similar to OA - and there aren't 12 of them!

If you need help to sort out your overeating then I would say for a few quid this book is definitely worth a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essentail for anyone suffering from bulemia, 6 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I used Dr. Fairburn's step by step treatment plan to normalize my eating and stop my bulemia. I have gained control of my life and refer to his book often for reinforcement of its principles and to continue assisting me with my recovery. He provides a clear and comprehensive rational behind each step in treatment, making you feel very confident in his techniques and approaches. If you have a sincere desire to become healthy and well, buy this book, it will be the best thing you could do for yourself.
