5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Saver 18 Dec 2003
I read this book after suffering from various ED's for over 11 years. Having been through the system with no great success I had pretty much given up. This book saved my life. Reading Dr Fairburns words took away so many feelings of lonliness and isolation, this guy really knows his stuff. I would say this book is a must for anyone suffering from Eating Disorders or merely fighting the diet cycle. I have completed the self help section of this book and am now well on the road to recovery. I keep this book with me at all times. If you have an ED, please read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, comprehensive and effective. 21 Oct 2009
Tone: The tone of the book is compassionate but logical. While reading it I never felt bullied or moralised to, nor did I feel like the author was buddying up to me in the false, "You go girl!"-type way that some authors do.

Information: I had read a lot about eating disorders before this book, but here I found new, helpful information, presented in a very clear way.

Efficacy: Thumbs up! "Overcoming Binge Eating" is the first and only piece of writing to help me with binge eating and bulimia. I particularly recommend it to anyone who's at the end of their tether - who's tried all sorts of things and still can't seem to get a handle on their problem. I was at that stage, and I still find it amazing that the book helped me change as much as it did. I'm far healthier and happier now in regards to eating.

It's worth noting also that I read the book years ago and am still doing well because of it. (YAY!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensible advice that works 27 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I bought this book in desperation when I was completely unable to control my eating. A month later I am (usually!) eating 3 regular meals and 3 small snacks a day.
I was impressed that what is in the book is based on real research. The author doesn't make any miraculous claims but is realistic about what is achievable.
The programme Fairburn sets out is easy to understand and starts small eg just record what you're eating & how you're feeling, then progresses so over time you learn how to deal with the urge to binge.
I think one of the other reviews says this is a 12 step programme - this makes it sound like Overeaters Anonymous, which is misleading. The author does not recommend abstaining from any specific foods, and the steps are not similar to OA - and there aren't 12 of them!
If you need help to sort out your overeating then I would say for a few quid this book is definitely worth a try.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
After years of dysfunctional eating and having problems with my relationship with food, I was incredibly relieved to find such spot-on information about the troubles I have been experiencing with regards to binge eating disorder.
This book not only focuses on BED but also covers bulimia and anorexia. The first half of the book is very informative about the traits of all conditions backed up with scientific evidence which really does help make you realise that you're not alone in this. The second half is basically an action plan on how to tackle it step by step, covering the potential expectations and also the pitfalls you may encounter.
This book is THE book to read if you feel that you are dealing with these issues, it stresses that if your condition is severe that you should seek professional help and that the book can be used in conjunction with such help but it can also easily be used on its own to help tackle the problmes described. I am already feeling much better around food and am optimistic that this eating disorder CAN be overcome which is an amazing feeling and a much needed relief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essentail for anyone suffering from bulemia 6 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I used Dr. Fairburn's step by step treatment plan to normalize my eating and stop my bulemia. I have gained control of my life and refer to his book often for reinforcement of its principles and to continue assisting me with my recovery. He provides a clear and comprehensive rational behind each step in treatment, making you feel very confident in his techniques and approaches. If you have a sincere desire to become healthy and well, buy this book, it will be the best thing you could do for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful 26 Feb 2012
By HHChelt
This book proved as useful as everyone had told me. It was suggested to me by doctors and clinicians and it was perfect. Very easy to read and understand and very easy to relate to. It has helped me get on with my life. Would suggest for anyone seeking help with binge eating as it includes a step-by-step program too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy 9 July 2011
Please buy this book rather than any of the others available on the subject! This was the third book I bought, and unfortunately it had been sitting my drawer as a 'last resort' option, until I finally spoke to a psychologisy who recommended it. It is far superior. Upon reading two books written by non-medically trained individuals, I was totally confused - both approaches seemed logical, but were telling me to do two completely different things. Dr Fairburn's approach is founded on statistical and medical research which gives his approach even more credence. You feel confident in his advice, whereas I was reluctant to follow other approaches as I was worried they would make the problem even worse. I wish I had picked this one up sooner! It is the only book I have found which uses cognitive behavioural therapy to deal with the issue. This makes so much more sense than authors who tell you to just eat what you want, when you want (if that was so easy, I wouldn't need this book) etc. - in my experience these are little better than the 'fad' diet books that are probably responsible for the underlying problem. I think there is a real risk of exacerbating the problem by following misguided advice.
