Product Description

Review

"Fairburn's broad, popular text... provides a concise discussion on related research, information and methods for controlling the behaviour of food bingers. The author has managed to intermix all the key issues throughout the text, thus providing consistent and relevant information." - John Thain, Nursing Standrard, August 2005

"This book is exceptional and can be used as a form of treatment, to bolster treatment, or to teach professionals about those who struggle with binge eating problems. Clearly this book is the culmination of Dr. Fairburn's years of Center for Eating and Weight Disorders" - Denise E. Wifley, Co-Director, Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders, USA

I read this book after suffering from various ED's for over 11 years. Having been through the system with no great success I had pretty much given up. This book saved my life. Reading Dr Fairburns words took away so many feelings of lonliness and isolation, this guy really knows his stuff. I would say this book is a must for anyone suffering from Eating Disorders or merely fighting the diet cycle. I have completed the self help section of this book and am now well on the road to recovery. I keep this book with me at all times. If you have an ED, please read this book.

This book proved as useful as everyone had told me. It was suggested to me by doctors and clinicians and it was perfect. Very easy to read and understand and very easy to relate to. It has helped me get on with my life. Would suggest for anyone seeking help with binge eating as it includes a step-by-step program too.

I bought this book in desperation when I was completely unable to control my eating. A month later I am (usually!) eating 3 regular meals and 3 small snacks a day.
I was impressed that what is in the book is based on real research. The author doesn't make any miraculous claims but is realistic about what is achievable.
The programme Fairburn sets out is easy to understand and starts small eg just record what you're eating & how you're feeling, then progresses so over time you learn how to deal with the urge to binge.
I think one of the other reviews says this is a 12 step programme - this makes it sound like Overeaters Anonymous, which is misleading. The author does not recommend abstaining from any specific foods, and the steps are not similar to OA - and there aren't 12 of them!
If you need help to sort out your overeating then I would say for a few quid this book is definitely worth a try.

I used Dr. Fairburn's step by step treatment plan to normalize my eating and stop my bulemia. I have gained control of my life and refer to his book often for reinforcement of its principles and to continue assisting me with my recovery. He provides a clear and comprehensive rational behind each step in treatment, making you feel very confident in his techniques and approaches. If you have a sincere desire to become healthy and well, buy this book, it will be the best thing you could do for yourself.

The book is aimed at people with bulimia nervosa or other binge-eating problems, it's not a weight-loss or diet book - though there is a section with some general advice for those with a binge-eating disorder who are also overweight.

The first section summarises what is known about eating disorders, particularly about binge eating, and the various theories about what causes it, who suffers from it etc.

The second half of the book is a detailed self-help program which you follow step-by-step over a number of months, starting with a practical approach - monitoring your current eating, establishing a more regular pattern of eating, minimising the purging behaviours etc, this reduces the immediate symptoms and gets the problem under control. Then you tackle the emotional issues behind your eating problem, this helps make permanent changes to your eating and attitudes, not just a short-term fix for the symptoms. This is an evidence-based approach, based on the cognitive-behavioural therapies which have been proven to work effectively and help people with these disorders to regain control and return to a normal life.

This book will not necessarily single-handedly 'cure' a serious eating disorder, however it's well worth trying as a first step before seeking professional help, or alongside counselling or therapy.

I found the writing style very warm and compassionate, while at the same time being authoritative and intelligent. Obviously written by someone with an excellent knowledge of the subject, and practical experience in helping people with these problems. I found it a very useful resource, and the self-help program was very effective in breaking the cycle of binging and getting my life back to normal.

Please buy this book rather than any of the others available on the subject! This was the third book I bought, and unfortunately it had been sitting my drawer as a 'last resort' option, until I finally spoke to a psychologisy who recommended it. It is far superior. Upon reading two books written by non-medically trained individuals, I was totally confused - both approaches seemed logical, but were telling me to do two completely different things. Dr Fairburn's approach is founded on statistical and medical research which gives his approach even more credence. You feel confident in his advice, whereas I was reluctant to follow other approaches as I was worried they would make the problem even worse. I wish I had picked this one up sooner! It is the only book I have found which uses cognitive behavioural therapy to deal with the issue. This makes so much more sense than authors who tell you to just eat what you want, when you want (if that was so easy, I wouldn't need this book) etc. - in my experience these are little better than the 'fad' diet books that are probably responsible for the underlying problem. I think there is a real risk of exacerbating the problem by following misguided advice.
