Amazon.co.uk Review

Arm-wrestling might be far down on most viewers' list of "most cinematic sports," but Sylvester Stallone certainly goes the distance to prove the contrary in this lightweight but entertaining mid-'80s action/family feature. Stallone (who co-wrote the script with Stirling Silliphant) plays taciturn trucker Lincoln Hawk (though he's called "Hawks" by large portions of the cast), who faces two considerable challenges at once: to win the Las Vegas Arm Wrestling Championship, and to impress the son (David Mendenhall) who's been turned against him by his grandfather (Robert Loggia, snarling up a storm). Menahem Golan's direction and the soundtrack of bombastic '80s pop-rock (by Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and others) is anything but subtle, and the host of opponents Stallone faces look like they were culled from professional wrestling (indeed, veteran grappler Terry Funk is in the cast), but Sly stalwarts and '80s action aficionados may find this rousing entertainment. The widescreen anamorphic DVD offers only the original theatrical trailer as an extra. –- Paul Gaita

Synopsis

Big-rig trucker Lincoln Hawk's (Sylvester Stallone) only chance for a better existence, which includes starting his own business and earning the love of his son, lies in his considerable talent for arm-wrestling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Over The Top Rocks!, 28 Oct 2005
By A Customer
What a belter! Stallone plays Lincoln Hawk, a one man truck driving, arm westling machine ready to take on the world in one pump of his bicep.

He picks up his posh, annoying son from military school and teaches him the sacred art of arm westling whilst they bond over a long truck journey...I know i've bonded with my father in the same way and i'm sure most of you reading this have too.

In order to keep his biceps ripped Lincoln has devised an ingenious contraption in his rig that allows him and his son to build muscle whilst on the road.

Half way through the film Lincoln's evil father in law takes Lincoln's son from him and triea to buy Lincoln off to go away. Lincoln, being the man he is, gets his own back by driving his monster rig straight through the front of evil father in laws mansion. That'll learn him!

Before you know it we're at the annual world arm westling championships in...you guessed it...Vagas baby! Lincoln comes up against some fierce arm wrestling freaks, all of whom are slightly mental. Look out for the one that drinks car oil to give himself strenght, and one that pumps himself up by eating the end of his cigar with no visible ill effects. GRRR!!!

I won't spoil the ending, needless to say, alls well that ends well in the world of a single parent arm westling truck driver.

Keep on trucking!

3.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Movie, 26 May 2004
By Kam Wing Hung Billy - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This was a movie produced in 1987, it adhered to the old formula of success of Stallone's movie.

It will keep your attention from the beginning to the end. In the latter part of arm wrestling, it is really exciting, you will worry about Hwak (Stallone), his opponents are all too powerful.

The picture quality of this DVD is poor, it seems it was produced in the 60's. There is no extra at all.

As a whole, it is a good movie. I like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Handed but not OTT
Stallone is ideally cast as as a truck driver and trying to be a good father for his son. This film is all about the thrill of seeing Stallone reveal his more 'sensitive' side... Read more
