Product Description

One of Hollywood’s original child stars, Judy Garland was plucked from vaudeville obscurity to become a massive box office draw, famous the world over as Doroty in The Wizard Of Oz. Her career as a star of film and recorded music continued through the 1940s and 1950s, with leading roles in many of MGM’s classic musicals, as well as hit records. Judy Garland achieved show business immortality following her premature and tragic death, and today she is revered as an iconic figure. This new compilation presents the greatest moments of Judy’s singing career--from romantic ballads such as "Over The Rainbow" and her first big hit "You Made Me Love You", through to up tempo numbers from her musical appearances, such as "Get Happy", and "A Couple Of Swells (recorded with Fred Astaire)".

How do you decide what makes a track qualify to be included in a compilation of the "Best of". Sometimes it is because of the mark of success in terms of sales of singles in the Pop charts. But that is not the case here with "The very Best of Judy Garland".
This "Best of" compilation is based on the most recognised songs associated with the legend that is Judy Garland.
However in the UK Judy did have just one hit single that is not included in this compilation. The single was "The man that got away". It is seems surprising that there were no more than one top 50 single for Judy in the UK chart but it doesn't matter because this compilation proves the quality of the performer and her repetoir of recordings.
The title of the compilation is predictably "Over the rainbow", the most famous song associated with Judy Garland. The ever lasting success of the movie "The Wizard of Oz" that this song comes from will cement this song as her most popular recording.
The song has gained a new generation of fans as the song has become absorbed into the contempory and modern repetoir of songs for todays singers thanks to the success of the unique version by Eva Cassidy in the 1990s. Here, on this compilation we get the original version by Judy as track one.
After that the compilation gets under way with a great selection of songs that span the long career of Judy Garland as both an Actress and singer.
There is the wonderful "zing went the strings of my heart" and the Benny Goodman classic "Stompin at the Savoy". And the romantic "You made me love you" taken from the film "Broadway Meleody". Judy also recorded some George Gershwin songs for the film "girl crazy" with "Embraceable you", "I got rhythm" and "but not for me". Then "Swanee" from the film "A star is born".

There are so many versions of this song, all lovely, but my group wanted a straight forward version we could sing along to. This version has not dated at all.

Excellent anthology of the Decca years 8 Nov. 2001
By R. Riis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Smart and well-done compilation of Judy Garland's best-known Decca hit studio recordings (not the film soundtrack versions). The film recordings tend to be better recorded (and are available on a recommended compilation on Rhino), but the sound here is quite good and the performances are classic. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" features the rarely-anthologized original wartime lyrics that make the song more poignant in my estimation. Booklet includes track-by-track notes with recording dates and context. Nicely done.

Some of the very best of Judy Garland 5 Mar. 2007
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD offers an excellent collection of some--not all--of the best of Judy Garland's work for Decca Records when she was an actress at MGM. Judy's voice is in excellent form on this CD although there is a fair amount of surface noise on the initial two or three tracks. In addition, just so you know, these recordings are mostly, if not all, the ones she recorded for Decca Records--they are NOT the recordings from the soundtracks of her movies. That having been said, however, this CD does add some splendid bonuses that we would not have heard were it not for Decca Records: Judy's duet with Bing Crosby on "Yah-Ta-Ta, Yah-Ta-Ta (Talk, Talk, Talk);" and her duet with The Merry Macs on "The Atchison, Topeka And The Santa Fe."

To state that Judy Garland "had the pipes" to be Hollywood's undisputed Queen Of The Musical would be a crass understatement. Judy's voice sensed and invariably expressed every little nuance of every word and phrase she ever sang. Her voice sounded much, much better than any female recording artist or actress I've ever heard. She could sing like a woman whose heart had been so irreparably broken that even the hardest of hearts would be deeply moved. She could also perform a rousing number that would make you want to jump up and dance with joy from the very moment she began to sing.

On this CD just one listen proves it: Once you've heard Garland, there are no other female singers. She delivers a charming performance of "Over The Rainbow" and this is followed by "Dear Mr. Gable: You Made Me Love You." Her "Friendship" duet with Johnny Mercer charms you and she sings "Blues In The Night (My Mama Done Tol' Me)" in such a way that your heart feels everything she sings. Judy also performs great numbers by George and Ira Gershwin with grand aplomb; her renditions of "Embraceable You;" "But Not For Me" and "I Got Rhythm" stun you with the total synchronicity of the finest Gershwin tune and Judy Garland's magnificent voice.

This CD also contains alternate takes of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "Yah-Ta-Ta, Yah-Ta-Ta (Talk, Talk, Talk)." Wonderful!

The liner notes include an extensive essay about Judy, MGM and Decca Records by Ron O'Brien; and the notes include several lovely photos of Judy as well. You get the song credits, too.

I sing the praises of many vocalists when I write reviews of CDs I have in my collection; but there is no one I can think of who deserves praise more than the unparalleled Judy Garland. Indeed, I doubt we'll ever see another quite like her. She was not only a natural talent; she became so polished and sophisticated in her presentations that others could merely aspire to be like her. She remains the greatest American entertainer ever; and she is very possibly the world's greatest entertainer as well. Judy's immeasurable contributions to the arts could never be overlooked or forgotten; and she remains fondly remembered and loved by old fans and new to this day.

Thank you, Judy.

Judy sold these songs without even trying--she was THAT good 19 Feb. 2008
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Over the Rainbow is a great budget priced CD that showcases the singular vocal talents of the immortal Judy Garland. Nobody could ever touch audiences the way Judy could; and this CD more than proves her contributions to the arts were beyond comparison.

The CD starts out with Judy singing "Over The Rainbow" which was recorded around the time she was in The Wizard Of Oz. This rendition of "Over The Rainbow" sometimes picks up the pace a bit from the movie soundtrack version--this is NOT from the soundtrack of The Wizard Of Oz. Nevertheless, Judy turns in a fabulous performance and it makes the perfect appetizer for the rest of the CD's hits.

"You Made Me Love You (Dear Mr. Gable)" was one of Judy's first masterpieces ever captured on old 78s and in the movie Broadway melody of 1938; the story goes that Judy sang this so well the movie going audiences applauded at the end of this song as if Judy had given a live performance! Judy sings "You Made Me Love You (Dear Mr. Gable) with panache and great sensitivity; I could never forget this performance. "For Me And My Gal" showcases Judy singing sweeter than I've ever heard a lady sing; and she enhances the natural beauty of this number simply by using her incredible voice!

"I'm Nobody's Baby" again features Judy's excellent vocals from her MGM years; the strings work well in the musical arrangement, too. "I Got Rhythm" from Girl Crazy features a great big band arrangement to accompany Judy as she flawlessly delivers this number.

"Swanee" is a solid number that Judy always loved to sing; and you can tell she's enjoying every minute of recording this when you hear this! Judy's excellent diction bolsters her performance even more. The album ends strong with Judy singing "Changing My Tune;" this features a slightly older Garland in perfect form; the strings and more make a fine musical arrangement.

Overall, for the casual Judy Garland fan, this CD is a great choice. Many diehard fans will also want this for their collections. I highly recommend this fine album.

Vintage Judy 9 Feb. 2007
By Annie Van Auken - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Dutch label DISKY has assembled one terrific and comprehensive collection of Judy Garland songs-- many are original film soundtracks, and every single one of these songs is Judy Garland at her finest. Judy appears here with among others, the Victor Young and David Rose orchestras; she duets with Gene Kelly {"For Me And My Gal," "When You Wore A Tulip") and Bing Crosby ("Mine"). "Bidin' My Time," with harmonca and chorus, is a particular highlight. The title number, "Over The Rainbow," isn't from the WIZARD OF OZ soundtrack, but it is surely contemporary with that 1939 film.

Sound quality is good, considering the source material-- not hi-fi. No liner notes.

JUDY GARLAND OVER THE RAINBOW belongs in every fan's collection.
