Although it pains me to say it as a devout Hammill fan, he is rather inconsistent and there are probably only around half a dozen records which would be reliably recommended as have-to-buy additions to the music fans' CD collection.
Over is one of these undoubtedly. In fact, I would without reservation regard this as one of the very greatest albums of all time.
It's lyrically intensely personal and with exceptional tunes and musical performances to match.
It starts uncharacteristically with Crying Wolf, lyrically wrenching but with a rock arrangement out of synch with the remainder of the album. There then follows Autumn which is more typically pared down but is not directly related to his own experiences.
We then get down to the core with the complex and heartfelt Time Heals and the acoustic guitar-based Alice. This Side Of The Looking Glass is a masterpiece, showcasing the violin of late period Van der Graff member Graham Smith. Betrayed, again with Smith, is a violent portrait of soured love while On Tuesdays She Used To Do Yoga takes a gentler view of the same situation. The album closes with Lost And Found which ends with some vague hope lyrically of future happiness arising from the lost love theme of the preceeding material.
There are many artists who convey the disappointment of love and life. There is no better example than this momumental album. If you think this may appeal, take the time to experience the Hammill view; you will empathise and be enthalled by these songs.
