Book Description

Life is complicated in the once-quiet beach town of Santa Feliz. Over the past six months many teens have inexplicably become animal shape-shifters known as Wildlings. The town is rife with fear, and Wildlings have quickly learned to keep their animal identities hidden or face persecution.

Now that Josh Saunders has a mountain lion living under his skin, his life seems to careen from one crisis to another. His best friends have just helped him narrowly escape cruel medical experimentation, and now that he's back home Josh wants at least a few more days of living like a normal teenager. But the FBI is tailing him, a vengeful school bully is out to hurt and expose him, and a formidable Wildling Elder has secretly arranged to have him killed by the hand of one of his own Wildling friends.

In Charles de Lint's dramatic follow-up novel to Under My Skin, Josh must confront all the inherent dangers of his new life, including violent street gangs and the threat of treachery on the part of some his very best friends. His longtime confidante, Marina, is once again keeping secrets from him, and as Josh discovers how to harness and wield his newfound powers, he faces crucial decisions about the bonds of leadership, love and loyalty.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to his usual standard 12 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read most of Charles de Lint's books, and this is the first time I've been disappointed - this is really not up to his usual standard. I read a preface by him once, where he said he didn't write books for kids or young adults specifically, he just wrote books. Unfortunately, this book definitely reads as though it were written for a young adult audience, and suffers for it. It is almost as though he has gone through a check list of points he should hit to engage the require audience. It feels a little formulaic as a result. It is a real pity, as if he had just written the way he usually does, with strong characters, excellent story and subtle fantasy/reality interweaving, it would have been a much better book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Charles de Lint! What more can I say? 15 July 2013

Seriously, though, this second in the Wildlings series is excellent. While it is geared primarily for teens, it is just a great a read for adults. Using his wonderful brand of magic and fantasy, de Lint writes here about the coming of age in a small town of a special group of kids and how they come to terms with who they are. Under My Skin is the first in the series, and you really do have to read it before this one, or you won't really understand what is going on. Both are wonderful and, if you have teenage/pre-teen kids who love fantasy, magic and myth, get these. If you are are youthful being of ANY age, get these.

Charles de Lint is one of the best character builders I've ever read. I really cared about each and every person in this book because de Lint gave them life. The only down side - turning the page to find its the end!!!
4.0 out of 5 stars A YA novel set in a really interesting and compelling world 27 May 2013

This is the second volume in the series. I would strongly NOT recommend jumping in here- please read #1 first.

The plotting was very good- in my opinion, better than #1, since it has less of an established conspiracy tone to it, though i expect that'll be revisited in the future, based on foreshadowing.

I really liked re-connecting with the characters from #1. And the plot gets less action-movie, and more subtle, and I really liked that. Many of the secondary- not POV characters- are very complex and not merely plot devices as they can be, especially in YA books which tend to be shorter than the tomes they sell to us "adults". (But that's a different issue!)

While I mostly don't mind present-tense writing- it does give an immediate kick to the plot- in my opinion this time it called itself to itself. I only say this because some of my friends are very anti- first-person-present for the voice.

A more important issue is that the "voices" of the first-person narrators are more similar than one would like. Ideally, with multiple 1st-person narrators- one can read a few words and figure out who is narrating. That was hard to do here, since the POV characters all sounded more-or-less the same.

Still- it was a very engaging read, and I look forward to #3!
5.0 out of 5 stars I was a teenage Shapechanger 24 April 2013

I got the Kindle edition, because I couldn't wait, but now I'm ordering the paper, because everything of de Lint's is a keeper, and I want the permanence. But I noticed that the reviews hadn't moved over, and I want people to know how much I like this one, so I'm transferring the same review.

I think I liked this second book even better than the first -- of course, it had the advantage of building on the the character development in the first book (and it can stand alone, too, but it's still better if you've already read "Under My Skin"). It can stand alone, CdL is great at putting in all the basic character without making it obvious and boring, but all the little touches that would have to be quoted from the first book, still in your head, enrich this one. It's also getting more into CdL's universe, which harks back to a lot of earlier books, and a good introduction to that for young readers (which I'm not, but I love it anyway). And there's plenty of fast-moving action and plot complications, from the teen viewpoint, too.

If you've read the reviews ahead of me, you already know the basic idea, so I won't go into that. Are there any more stars than five that I could give to it?
5.0 out of 5 stars What can you say? It's de Lint. It's great. If you haven't read it, you want to! 4 Feb. 2015

What can you say about Charles de Lint? When it comes to urban fantasy he's just the best, period, and any de Lint that I haven't read yet is a cause for great excitement. My only complaint about this three book series is that I have gobbled them up in under two weeks, cruising in on the last third of the last book, and there's just nothing else like it in sight! If you like Charles de Lint, you'll love this series too. It's supposedly a YA (young adult) series, but I'm 69 and I'm loving it! Of course I gobbled up all the Harry Potters too........
