Biography

Plenty has changed in the ten years since Kathryn Williams released her first record, 1999’s Dog Leap Stairs, famously recorded for a large two figure sum (eighty quid). As the Liverpool-bred, Newcastle-based singer-songwriter releases her eighth studio album, she’s not only busier than ever, with several wildly varied projects in the pipeline, she seems at ease with a career that has had several… Read more in Amazon's Kathryn Williams Store

Product Description

BBC Review

If it's bittersweet tales of modern life and soundtracks to heartbreaks and love shakes you are after, then Kathryn Williams has long been a name to look to. Ever since she got a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize for the sublimely subtle Little Black Numbers, she's been strumming out Sunday morning soothers and late night meanderings that have delighted at every turn.

Unfortunately though, that enjoyment ended with the humdrum covers album Relations, which saw her failing to stamp her mark on such greats as Lou Reed's ''Candy Says'' and Neil Young's ''Birds'', all recorded as tribute to the artists that inspired her. The album, recorded in-between the writing and recording of Over Fly Over, also seems to have robbed her of her edge.

It was meant to be the spike to spur Williams back to the top of her game. She admitted to hitting a personal slump before its recording, but unfortunately there are no signs of it ending. She has never been an acerbic or aggressive writer, but there was often a twist, a turned screw to her lyrics that revealed a universal truth on the back of a beguiling guitar.

Unfortunately, Over Fly Over feels blanched. It feels over-produced and undercooked, slipping through one ear and falling out the other with little snagging on the way through. While her voice is still as silky as ever, it meanders without purpose, never grabbing and twirling the way that it has previously.

Over Fly Over is, in a word, disappointing. In its ordinariness, Williams has pushed herself back behind the liveliness of her contemporaries (the likes of Eddi Reader and Kate Rusby) and further towards the mediocrity of the dreadful Katie Melua. It's time to go back to that record collection and find some better inspiration. --Chris Long

Kathryn rocks! 14 May 2005
Format:Audio CD
'Over Fly Over' is Kathryn Williams's first CD of her own material in two and a half years, and it turns out to have been well worth the wait. As usual, glorious melodies, delicate arrangements and Kathryn's uniquely beautiful breathy contralto. There's the usual black humour ('Beachy Head' especially, but also throughout), bizarre experiments ('Just Like A Birthday') and 'song with the same title as the previous album' ('Old Low Light #2'). A slightly harder edge to the sound overall and some unexpected echoes - the intro to the excellent 'Indifference # 1' sounds uncannily like 'Meddle' - era Pink Floyd! No surprise after her cover of 'Candy Says' that the feel of the opening track ('Three') is reminiscent of the Velvet Underground. Great lines: "How did love appear on my face like glasses?", "we wait around like rain inside clouds", "ten sailors' pants could be cut from this sky of blue", "pavements like wet lino sheets". Top marks to David Scott and Laura Reid as always, but all the playing on this CD is great. No one who likes Kathryn Williams will be disappointed by this - it's very good indeed. Can't wait to see her in Kendal!

Most people will be familiar with Kathryn Williams from the covers CD "Relations" and if you liked that you'll like this. Hers is a quiet talent and it can take a few listens to fully appreciate the quality of the songwriting and musicianship. The combination of Kathryn's distinctive vocals and the excellent instrumental line-up makes this a welcome addition to the female singer-songwriter canon.
