By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Ben Marwood is a singer/songwriter and he comes from Reading.
He favours the troubador approach; a man and his guitar who
together with a few willing friends has delivered a fine album
with 'Outside There's A Curse'. There are ten tracks in the
collection; some of them are sad and others are very funny indeed!

'Singalong' is a corker! Mr Marwood drolly reminds us that a
beard may be a necessary evil to suffer if he is to be allowed
to play in folk clubs across the land. It is a jolly tune with
some ribald pedal steel guitar and banjo thrown in for good
measure. With a little practice the song may well be memorable
enough for us to sing along to. (After a few pints of mild I
can usually be counted upon to make a fool of myself!)

The style is a little bit country, a little bit folksy and
cute and clever in equal measure in a home-made kind of way.
Mr Marwood has a very good voice; a little rough around the edges
but with a capacity to communicate a wide range of emotions.
'Toil' is a splendid example of his control of both the words
and the melody. He slaps his guitar for emphasis here and there
which adds an appealing level of spontaneity to the performance.

The recording has a one-take live feel running all the way through.
Many of the scratchings and mutterings and verbal asides are left
in which makes one feel as though we could almost be in the studio
with him. There is a freshness and immediacy about all that we hear.

'Tell Avril Lavigne I Never Wanted To Be Her Stupid Boyfriend Anyway'
(apart from being a strong contender for song-title of the year!) is
a simple but strangely affecting composition whose laconic mixture of
jealousy, bitterness and sorrow wears its broken heart on its sleeve.

Final track 'The District Sleeps Alone Tonight (The Postal Service
Cover)' brings this lovely album to a longingly whistful conclusion.

Mr Marwood's world is worth stepping into for a while.
Refreshingly honest, emotionally engaging and full of wry humour.

Recommended.

Lovely young boy 10 April 2011
Format:Audio CD
I think everybody should buy this cassette because young Ben's put a lot of work into it and writes some really lovely songs and is the best singer I know as well.

If you get the chance you should go to one of his live concerts as well because he has a lovely smile and is a all-round great chap. He's really funny and smart and a great catch if there's any girls out there.

And he's not the angry boy some people make him out to be, he's really nice and mannerly and I think everyone should buy this cassette now, I loved it.

By Ells
Format:Audio CD
Ben Marwood's first full album, released on Xtra Mile Recordings, Outside There's a Curse is a heartfelt collection of intimate acoustic songs with clever lyrical twists. With a hefty dose of cynicismn tempered with honesty and few gentle swipes at modern culture, this is an interesting listen.

There's something charming about Ben's voice, sometimes soothing, sometimes gruff, it carries the record, tying the album together through tracks which vary in tone.

Stand out tracks: Singalong (fuller in instrumentation than some other tracks on the album, it's a catchy little number), I Will Breathe You In, and the final track - an acoustic cover of Postal Service's The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.

Prize for the best song title has to go to Tell Avril Lavigne I Never Wanted to be her Stupid Boyfriend Anyway.

This is an excellent piece of work, and I have a feeling that this is just the beginning for Mr Marwood.
