This to me is comfort TV. A charming, gently funny series, even touched with well played and subtle pathos, for someone like myself who has spent many years playing for various cricket clubs, I can really relate to everything that happens in these episodes. Robert Daws is wonderful as ever as the insufferable, pompous, blinkered Roger Dervish, Brenda Blethyn is a national treasure and never more so as the long suffering, never complaining mousey Mim. Tim Spall and the gorgeous Josie Lawrence as the Costello's are a couple I would love to actually meet in real life! And all the supporting characters are easily identifiable as people you would know yourself. I must make a special mention of the ever dependable and usually underrated Dennis Lill as the predatory, vain, shallow Dennis. Even if you don't understand cricket you will get something out of this series. The humour is clever, wry and never schmaltzy, and wonderfully English. Oh for more series of this brilliant programme. This just goes to show when ITV really tried they COULD produce quality comedy. You really wouldn't believe it these days.
