There's plenty of sci-fi anime series out there, but "Outlaw Star" is something a bit special, just like the ship in the title. Instead of comedy or pure futuristic adventure, this series strikes a balance of futuristic grittiness and some outright comedy, with some deliciously unexpected twists and a satisfying finale.

For money, Outlaw Gene Starwind and his preteen pal Jim will do almost anything -- bounty-hunting, bodyguarding, and other odd jobs. But when they agree to guard a strange woman (whose name turns out to be "Hot Ice" Hilda) and her mystery briefcase, they didn't expect to be hunted by pirates -- or that the briefcase contains a cyborg girl, Melfina.

For their own safety, Hilda sweeps Jim and Gene off to the system where she's hiding another ship -- the advanced Outlaw Star, which requires Melfina to fly. And when Hilda is killed, Gene suddenly finds himself the owner of a mysterious, ultra-advanced, ultra-powerful grappler ship. Except everyone else wants it too, and to keep it, Jim will have to deal with more than just pirates and Tao masters.

As the story proceeds, Gene will have to deal with a beautiful, lethal assassin who reluctantly joins up, killer robots the beastlike Ctarl-Ctarl, the terrifying Anten Seven, a prison planet, giant carnivore shrimps, and a familiar ship that might carry his father's murderers. They travel from planet to planet and even get into a space race, before setting off to find the Galactic Leyline.

Imagine "Outlaw Star" as a sort of "Cowboy Bebop," but not nearly as sad, and with more emphasis on comedy, money, and fast-paced space battles.

Even though I already have the full series on dvd imported am still pretty excited for this dvd to come out. Outlaw Star is my most favourite anime EVER! there are other animes out there that I watch and others I liked before i discovered Outlaw star. But discovering Outlaw Star on tv years ago back when I was a little kid pretty much replaced all the other animes I might of considered my favourite anime at the time.

Ever since discovering Outlaw Star on tv as a kid i was straight away hooked on the show and wanted to watch it everytime it would come on tv. Outlaw Star is really something special. There are loads of other sci-fi animes out there but Outlaw Star has its own unique style. If your an anime fan or a sci-fi fan or both. Like I am. Them I highly recommended this show you won't regret it.

I first watched Outlaw Star almost 10 years ago, back when Sky TV had a little-known kids channel named Toonami. I've watched it many times since, and Lord knows I'll watch it many times again. It's bloody genius. It makes me laugh, cry, and adore the characters every single time around. I honestly don't know how so few anime fans have heard of it, but it hurts my otaku heart that such an absolute gem is so underrated.

Space won't know what hit it when a rag-tag bunch of misfits including the lecherous, hard-drinking outlaw Gene Starwind and his long-suffering little mechanic pal Jim, a fierce female samurai named Suzuka, and a disgraced officer from a race of cat-like aliens named Aisha are forced together as a mysterious briefcase containing a beautiful young woman named Melfina, and a spaceship with a mysterious connection to her, The Outlaw Star, falls into their hands.

Like its big brother Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star balances an episodic format with a deeper overarching plot; the episodes waver between the crew searching for answers about who or what Melfina really is, and the various misadventures they get into along the path to finding out. The writers know when to tickle you and when to play it serious, and Outlaw Star is filled with both drama and humour and never fails to deliver either. It has some incredibly poignant moments presented so memorably and beautifully they will stay with you forever...and it also has 'Hot Springs Planet Tenrei'. When I first saw that episode I think it was the hardest I'd laughed, ever. It rivals Full Metal Panic Fumoffu for exactly how much side-splitting slapstick you can pack into 23 minutes.

I first caught a glimpse of Outlaw Star on digital television when I was

about 12 and it immediately caught my eye.

Although heavily edited the series captivated me with a mix of action

and mild violence.

When I bought the collection and saw the uncut versions, the series

was even better, adult jokes I didnt get to hear as a teenager kept me

laughing for ages after watching some of the best episodes and the action

still captivated me.

This show really is for adult blokes, its full of lewd humour (the main character is basically a lovable rogue/letch) and just blatantly funny expressions.

The main plot is similar to cowboy bebop, a guy aqquires a ship and after

a time (and a number of hilarious events, aqquires a crew of loveable misfits.

It really does put me in mind of cowboy bebop and also joss wheedons

Now as with most animé series the animation of "OS"isnt as good as an

OVA, but it is still of a superb standard, action is well detailed

and suitably paced.

The dubbing of "OS" is extremely good, the voice actors hit their mark every

time, from humour to passion, to anger and sadness every emotion is spot on

and this is one of those animé that if you do watch it in english it is

just as enjoyable as watching it in its native language.

The actual picture of the set is amazingly good, each dvd is in a suitably

high definition and contains hardly and debris from the editing process

of the original film.
