This is just spellbinding playing - and really good fun as well. I can't get enough of 'The Hard Drive' in particular, the playing is full of humour and verve and is just so technically amazing that it actually takes your breath away. Fred's improvisations are based on his comprehensive mastery of piping techniques - its fascinating to hear how he develops patterns in his improvisations, almost like the variations in a piobaireachd. Fred Morrison is one of Scotland's national treasures, one of our most incredible musicians. He does his own thing and has his own sound. In Outlands, Fred finds a new groove - connecting with bluegrass. The combination of the energy of his piping alongside the skill and speed of bluegrass banjo/fiddle is brilliant. Its interesting how he makes the connection between the piping of Uist and bluegrass - there are deep roots there and it takes someone like Fred along with his world class bluegrass band to make it work as well as this. The musicality is what makes it work - nothing is forced. There are some beautiful airs as well, in particular the very poignant Leaving Uist which makes you think about that combination of missing a beautiful place and community with the excitement of making a new start. This album is bursting with music and will bring a big smile to your face.

As a piper I waited for the latest Fred Morrison CD with some anticipation and Outlands has exceeded my expectations. It is a celebration of the versatility of the pipes when played by musical master who is a genuine tradition bearer. He is also able to produce a wide selection of quite excellent compositions on this album. It is difficult to select highlights but I was particularly struck by his interpretation of the old Gaelic air" Nameless" and the verve of "Steve Byrne's Jig". I am also fascinated by the technical ability so ably demonstrated on the bluegrass tracks and will certainly want to share this great album with friends and family over the weeks ahead in the sure knowledge that this is a work of lasting quality.

This is the best traditional music/folk album I have heard in years. Varied, very well balanced and a joy to listen to as a result and not many instrumental albums in my experience achieve such overall consistency. Fred`Morrison is totally at ease with these bluegrass giants with pipes complemented seamlessly in such star collaborative tracks as "The Kansas City Hornpipe" and the " Outlands" title track - it seems as if they have always played together. The traditional Scottish compositions on the album are great on pipes and whistles with excellent guitar and bodhran accompaniment - this is a cracker of an album - have had it on repeat since I bought it!

I have grown to enjoy the variety of slow and vigorous sets which Fred plays, and having had his 'Celtic Connections' gig as one of my highights this year, was only too happy to pick up this CD with some tracks which featured in the concert. Fred is superbly aided and abetted by his fellow players, who include Tim O'Brien and Martin O'Neill; in 'Hard Drive', which does just that, my live experience made it apparent that Fred, laughing all over his face, is challenging them to keep up as he increases the pace - they did - it was great fun!

I'm only judging by the three myspace tracks and the live performances of Fred's compositions on youtube. But there is absolutely no one like him. No one else is world class in so many areas: playing, innovation, improvisation composition, heavyweight technique, top medals in the major competitions, global influence, ability to play different types of pipes, and so on. And now Fred unleashes this stunning collection of new tunes which are really a massive step forward in piping, bringing together traditional Scottish and American music really for the first time in such a wide-ranging manner. Sure to be a massive hit.

A really enjoyable CD, the unusual combination of musicians works very well. Unlike other reviewers I cannot comment on the technical quality of playing but I defy anyone not to smile and tap their feet to the faster tracks.

Agree with the previous reviewer. The three tracks released so far are absolutely magic. I wondered where Fred Morrison would go after his last album, seemed to have 'cracked' the trad sound. What I've heard is great - fresh and I have to say unexpected. Looking forward to the whole thing when its released (end of month?)
