Product Description

BBC Review

Just nine months after his self-titled 'solo' debut appeared, the increasingly skittish Conor Oberst has had another change of heart, with his backing musicians on that album not merely given equal billing on Outer South but, unwisely, handed nearly half of the songwriting duties. The result is an overlong, studiously retro album that - despite some winning songs - suggests the prolific Oberst is spreading his talent dangerously thin.

The album's first half is dominated by breezy, canter-paced country. Predictably, Oberst provides the best tunes (the playful Slowly (Oh So Slowly) and the infectious, stutter-riffed Nikorette), although Nik Freitas'Johnny Cash homage Big Black Nothing has charm, and the fizzy electronic tinge to Taylor Hollingsworth's Air Mattress provides welcome relief from the vintage sounds around it. Still, it's hard to shake the impression that the band enjoyed recording these saloon bar songs more than the rest of us will enjoy listening to them.

At least that's an improvement on much of the second half: on songs like the squalling, incoherent agitprop of Roosevelt Room and the aimless stroll that is Eagle On A Pole it doesn't sound like even the band are having much fun. The two low moments come with Oberst's Ten Women, an ''I done my woman wrong'' blues pastiche which aims for world-weary but just sounds tired, and Hollingsworth's trite closer, Snake Hill, a string of clichés barely connected by a melody.

Of course, any album presided over by someone as lavishly talented as Oberst is going to have stand-out moments. To All The Lights In The Windows features one of the album's most graceful melodies, as well as smart, scathing lyrics, while the hushed, funereal White Shoes is utterly beautiful, stripped down to a murmuring guitar and an aching, intimate vocal. These songs rank amongst his finest yet.

It's far too early to say that Oberst's talent is on the wane: after all, it's only two years since he released the eloquent, evocative Cassadaga as Bright Eyes: a truly great record. But we can probably wait a bit longer for his next record, for his sake, our sake and, most of all, for the sake of the music. --Jaime Gill

I felt I simply had to review this album after seeing the poor rating it has on here! This is one of the finest albums I've ever heard. I was first played this album 2 years ago, it remained in my cd player for weeks afterwards & I still listen to it all the time. The songs Eagle on a Pole, Nikorette & White Shoes are simply classics..one listen & I think you'd agree. I didn't know much of Conor Oberst before hearing this album so couldn't compare it to Bright Eyes, but I've heard everything since & still think it's in a league of its own. Get this now, it's at an amazing price! You won't be dissapointed, 16 brilliant tracks the everyone should own.

Thus far, you'd be hard pushed to find a bad album in Conor Oberst's already sizeable back-catalogue. Nothing has changed; this is not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination, but it just isn't as good as his previous efforts in his various bands (Bright Eyes, Desaparecidos etc). Even on eponymous last album there were those songs that really got the hairs up on the back of my neck because they were just brilliant songs (Cape Canaveral, Lenders in the Temple, Milk Thistle) but on 'Outer South' you're hard pushed to find any of those songs. As such, the album meanders through 16 'ok' tunes, interspersed by some decent ones. It would be easy to blame the Mystic Valley band for the album's failings as some of the band have been on song-writing and vocal duty. However, the songs written and sung soley by Oberst ain't all that much better. If you're an Oberst fan then this will tide you over and with 16 songs, there's plenty of material to get your teeth into. However, if you're newly interested in his music (perhaps on the back of the Halifax advert or whatever) then I suggest you go for one of his other records.

First thing..I admit that I have not particularly enjoyed any of Mr Oberst's other musical output but I heard a few tracks of this album on the radio (and Spotify) and decided to give this a go.
I would imagine that a few die-hard Bright Eyes fans would disagree but this album evokes memories of a folky Lemonheads, Ryan Adams, parts of Wilco and Ben Kweller. The music has a pleasant "wash" where the tracks seem to blend into each other and overall there is a pleasant mid-America/Americana feel to the tracks...with standard themes constantly emerging (living and dying in the same town, religious iconography, longing and broken hearts).
If you're looking for a compliment to balmy summer evenings then you can't really go wrong with this album. It's not revolutionary but has a certain charm that will keep you interested over multiple listens.
