Seduced by the front cover showing an idyllic outdoor room? If you need practical 'design' pointers in developing your own outdoor room you won't find that here. However, if you want inspiration, this book offers visual material by the bucket load. It isn't design based as the title implies, but a photo-essay of a host of 'outdoor rooms' of stunning houses from mostly the sunnier parts of the world. It spans all styles - modern, minimal, romantic, etc - and images are accompanied by micro-descriptions and, occasionally, micro-reviews. Information is broad and general indeed. The market for this book is clear - the directory lists solely US garden professionals (crediting almost as many photographers), and the 'product sources' list is all-American. There are no sketches, drawings, useful design context, which could help make the visionary photographs become more real. The book has the feel of a glamorous magazine feature that was ill-advisedly extended to book format.
