Now in their 27th year, 999 continue as strongly as ever. Unique amongst the original punk bands none can claim 3 original members in their line-up and unlike so many of their contemporaries 999 never called it a day nor sold out. Live they’re still pulling in the crowds.
This year has seen plenty more 999 activity, with tours of USA, Europe and the UK and the inevitable numerous appearances at the punk festivals. Expect an album of new material in 2004.
Recently 999 expert John Connolly was given the task of cataloguing the band’s extensive tape archive. During this he discovered several reel-to-reel tapes containing some amazing long forgotten studio recordings from between 1977 and 1979.
Amongst these tapes were 6 previously unreleased recordings and some fascinating demos including an amazing working version of ‘Feelin’ Alright With The Crew’ and stunning very different versions of ‘Titanic (My Over) Reaction’ and ‘English Wipeout’ and a song called ‘Solution’ that transformed itself into ‘Boiler’.
All these perfect quality previously unheard studio recordings have been compiled into this 16 track CD packaged in a 12-page booklet with rare photos and sleeve notes by frontman Nick Cash.
About the Artist
999 were conceived in late 1976 by Nick Cash (vocals/guitar) and Guy Days (guitar/vocals) who teamed up with Jon Watson (bass) and Pablo Labritain (drums). Their fist gig was January 1977 and constant gigging brought with it critical acclaim and a hard-core following who called themselves ‘The Crew’. The band released their own single ‘I’m Alive’ on Labritain Records and it did well enough to become a minor hit and earn them a contract with United Artists. ‘Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Emergency’ scaled into the lower regions of the charts and ‘Homicide’ made the Top 40 despite being banned by radio!
Early 1979 saw 999 tour the USA, an achievement in itself as they were still without a USA record deal at the time! The response was ecstatic and a deal with Polydor sealed.
After two albums 999 left United Artists, recorded a further 10 albums and to date have completed 15 USA tours, 92 London gigs, 29 UK tours and 21 European tours. An impressive tally from one of the most outstanding bands of their generation.
