Biography

Béla Fleck is often considered the premier banjo player in the world. A New York City native, he picked up the banjo at age 15 after being awed by the bluegrass music of Flatt & Scruggs. While still in high school he began experimenting with playing bebop jazz on his banjo, mentored by fellow banjo renegade Tony Trischka. In 1980, he released his first solo album, Crossing the Tracks, with… Read more in Amazon's Bela Fleck Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

What's the difference between a banjo and a trampoline? You take your shoes off before jumping on a trampoline. The banjo has long been the butt of jokes among the modern jazz fraternity, but Bela Fleck has restored some dignity to this unhappy instrument by introducing it to modern jazz, and playing fluent, boppish lines in place of the clunky, two-beat strums of New Orleans. Fleck's records sometimes suggest that his idea of jazz is as much funky blues as bebop, but he's certainly forged some interesting hybrids, mixing bluegrass with jazz, rock, world music and several points in between. Here, with his faithful bass companion Victor Wooten, he serves up a typically eclectic mélange. Future Man's electric drums sound brittle, but the leader's excellent jazz solo on "Earth Jam" is matched by contributions of similar quality from new tenor man Jeff Coffin and guests Paul McCandless and Andy Narell. --Mark Gilbert

How does a band, such as the flecktones, top a myriad of excellent albums that feature four of the most talented and inovative musicians in the industry today. Bring in more talent and throw the traditional concept of exceptable music out. This album not only breaks new ground with the track a moment so close, that is about as innovative a song as I have heard in years, but also plays into the Traditional concept of music brought into the 21 century with Aaron Copland's extremely memorable song Hoedown. They have brought it all together and shown what can happen when the great decide to be greater. This album is a must have for any music lover. Period.

Ok, this is the first album by the flecktones ive purchased and mainly got it because victor wooten is the bass player and i'm seeing them live soon. When i started listening to it i was not only pleased with the obvious good standard of bass playing but also how well all the instruments (banjo, sax, bass and electric drums) worked together. This is easy listening and a great album.
