Dr Ava Ward never thought her high flying friend Lorna would settle in a small farming community in Wisconsin; however that's what love will do to you. While Ava is happy to act as maid of honour at her friend's wedding to Gage, she can't think of anything more horrifying than settling in a small town like Flintlock. Yet from the moment she steps off the plane and encounters Arnie Simpson, she begins to think maybe she could uproot herself; however she first has to contend with one large obstacle; Arnie's reaction to her job. Who thought a wish made to her dying father would ruin her love life; yet every time Ava tells a man she's a proctologist, he runs a mile.
Arnie Simpson is the black sheep of his family; a graduate of MIT with an unbelievably high IQ, he has never found himself mentally stimulated by a woman until he meets Ava, a woman as clever as he. With her strange white hair, Arnie has difficultly believing she's even human; yet with the sizzling attraction between them, he's starting to find the idea of alien abduction appealing. Their relationship blooms quickly; yet Ava is unwilling to remain in Flintlock; frustrated by Arnie's lack of ambition and his reluctance to do more with his talents than just work as a plane mechanic; whilst Arnie believes Ava views him as nothing more than a brief fling.
Although this book is the sequel to "White Hot Holidays: Miss Behaviour" (the story of how Lorna and Gage met), this is a stand alone book. "Out of This World" is a great romance with loads of red hot sex and an interesting story line. Don't expect a standard contemporary romance; at the start of this book we read a communication between an alien species; planting two aliens on Earth to test the theory of Fate and whether these two strangers will be drawn together. Constantly monitored, any attraction this pair is seen to harbour towards a human is regarded as a threat to their experiment and neutralised. So are Ava and Arnie the guinea pigs in an alien experiment, or worse is it only one of them?

Not one of her better works

Ava Ward and Arnie Simpson are the smartest people around - and unable to hook up with someone that fully satisfies them as a result. Men can't get past Ava's job, and women invariably fail Arnie's intelligence test. When they meet up before their friends' wedding, sparks and misunderstandings fly. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it gets more than a little unexpected attention.
I'll say up front, I'm a fan of this author. I've read a number of her books and enjoyed them immensely, so I was really looking forward to this. However, by halfway through, I just wanted it to be over with already, and I finished it relieved that I actually made it. The humor that has delighted me in other works felt incredibly heavy-handed and overdone in this. Arnie in particular annoyed me. Practically every other line of dialogue of his started with, "I suggest..." whether or not it fit the meaning of the sentence or not. His perspective as well was riddled with over the top space metaphors and analogies, making it a chore to figure out what he was thinking, and his automatic assumption that Ava was an alien was ludicrous. Ava was handled much better, but even though I liked her and felt her reactions far more genuine and understandable, it wasn't nearly enough to save this story for me.

An alien queen sends two infants to Earth to be raised among humankind, to test the veracity of the Earth conception of "fate." Arnie Simpson is an airplane mechanic, a certified genius who longs for the vanguard of superior life forms. Everybody he knows scores on a level he considers barely intelligent, only lucky. Arnie is a very high intelligence individual plunked down into a decent, but unintelligent, family. He worries about somehow passing on dimwit genes to his own offspring, should he decide to have any, so contact and intercourse with superior life forms seems the obvious solution. If superior life doesn't exist somewhere, well, Arnie's life would be just a rather unfunny joke, not to mention a crying shame.
When he spots Dr. Ava Ward at the airport, Arnie experiences an electrical charge he attributes to the presence of another high intelligence. Arnie is not at all interested in external appearance, only in brain capacity, and he is certain he's just found someone who couldn't possibly be Earth-birthed. This is the funniest erotic book I have ever read. Arnie Simpson is a one of my favorite characters. His use of language will have you smiling and sometimes laughing out loud. His relationship with Ava is predictably crazed. Her career choice is unusual and the scene where Ava and Arnie talk with his family about her profession is hysterical. I highly recommend this book.
