Amazon.co.uk Review

Gomez must think of themselves as a live juggernaut to release a double live album with a bonus DVD as their fifth release. Recorded over the course of a three nights at a sold-out Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in January 2005, the six-piece plays a bluesy, psychedelic pop that’s breezily anthemic. And yeah, they are great live. Among the highlights is a spirited and spaced-out cover of one of Nick Drake’s best and least-covered songs, "Black Eyed Dog." Some of the songs are a bit lazy (the bloozy "Fill My Cup," the stoner anthem "Get Myself Arrested") but here’s a band that’s clearly awesome in their element. They might mix up genres, but unlike their Mercury Prize-winning debut, they rarely do so in unexpected ways. That is not a diss, either; this is very smartly done, shake-your-hips-and-make-out-with-the-cute-person-next-to-you party music. --Mike McGonigal

Gomez at their best 1 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
Over the past few years, people who have not had the opportunity to see Gomez live have had a few hints at the experience. Some live tracks on Abandoned Shopping Trolly Helpline and on a couple of single releases are all that there is, however this release more than makes up for it with 20 audio and 4 video tracks.
This band excel at what they do and it shows-from the opening seconds of Get Miles you know your going to be in for a hell of a ride. Big drums and pounding base lines, fantastic guitars with vocals to match. The tracks are unlike what you would have heard from a studio album, each is tweeked to suite live play and it works fantastically, with them being simmilar and yet different and gives you the joy of hearing them for the first time again.
If you liked the Gomez studio albums and want to hear what the band are truley capable of when let loose, then this is an album which you require.

Really okay. 9 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD
I like Gomez. In fact, I like them a lot. I like what they've done to the blues. I like their humour. I like their sophisticated rawness and their tailored raggedness. I like Gomez and I thoroughly expected to love this album.

I don't love it. I like it. In fact, I like it quite a lot. But I don't love it. I kind of expected that, when playing their songs live, they would add some new dimensions to them. I expected to hear more because they're a band for whom songs seem to evolve; they don't come into the world fully formed (if demos and early versions of some of their work I've heard are to be taken as typical examples), so I thought that the songs contained on this double-CD live set would have moved on somewhat more than they have.

Maybe I'm jaded, but I think that the songs on a live album should be 'more' somehow than their original studio recordings, but here they're not.

The songs are good. I like them. From that point of view this is quite a good 'best of' collection, but with some audience noise to add a bit of atmosphere. It also has a DVD with it whch has some snippets of live stuff from earlier in their career. If you like Gomez, you'll like this. It's okay. Other than that it doesn't have too much to recommend it.
