Product Description

Gomez must think of themselves as a live juggernaut to release a double live album with a bonus DVD as their fifth release. Recorded over the course of a three nights at a sold-out Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in January 2005, the six-piece plays a bluesy, psychedelic pop that’s breezily anthemic. And yeah, they are great live. Among the highlights is a spirited and spaced-out cover of one of Nick Drake’s best and least-covered songs, "Black Eyed Dog." Some of the songs are a bit lazy (the bloozy "Fill My Cup," the stoner anthem "Get Myself Arrested") but here’s a band that’s clearly awesome in their element. They might mix up genres, but unlike their Mercury Prize-winning debut, they rarely do so in unexpected ways. That is not a diss, either; this is very smartly done, shake-your-hips-and-make-out-with-the-cute-person-next-to-you party music. --Mike McGonigal

Over the past few years, people who have not had the opportunity to see Gomez live have had a few hints at the experience. Some live tracks on Abandoned Shopping Trolly Helpline and on a couple of single releases are all that there is, however this release more than makes up for it with 20 audio and 4 video tracks.
This band excel at what they do and it shows-from the opening seconds of Get Miles you know your going to be in for a hell of a ride. Big drums and pounding base lines, fantastic guitars with vocals to match. The tracks are unlike what you would have heard from a studio album, each is tweeked to suite live play and it works fantastically, with them being simmilar and yet different and gives you the joy of hearing them for the first time again.
If you liked the Gomez studio albums and want to hear what the band are truley capable of when let loose, then this is an album which you require.

I like Gomez. In fact, I like them a lot. I like what they've done to the blues. I like their humour. I like their sophisticated rawness and their tailored raggedness. I like Gomez and I thoroughly expected to love this album.
I don't love it. I like it. In fact, I like it quite a lot. But I don't love it. I kind of expected that, when playing their songs live, they would add some new dimensions to them. I expected to hear more because they're a band for whom songs seem to evolve; they don't come into the world fully formed (if demos and early versions of some of their work I've heard are to be taken as typical examples), so I thought that the songs contained on this double-CD live set would have moved on somewhat more than they have.
Maybe I'm jaded, but I think that the songs on a live album should be 'more' somehow than their original studio recordings, but here they're not.
The songs are good. I like them. From that point of view this is quite a good 'best of' collection, but with some audience noise to add a bit of atmosphere. It also has a DVD with it whch has some snippets of live stuff from earlier in their career. If you like Gomez, you'll like this. It's okay. Other than that it doesn't have too much to recommend it.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! (in an american accent)

I love Gomez and I'm so glad that this takes me back to 'Bring It On' and gives it a new edge - I feel like I'm listening to them for new again! This makes me want to see them live more than ever - stupidly I had the chance and went out on a date instead - STUPID!!!!!

Songs I've never really bothered with suddenly jump out at you and bite you on the bum - and songs like 'Make No Sound' and 'Get Miles' which we all love and revere just get better and better. Gomez are Kings. Thanks to my wife for buying me this GEM!!!!

GOMEZ Out West
Independiente Records. 20 tracks. 2CDs/DVD.
When Gomez burst onto the scene with the Mercury Music Prize winning "Bring It On" back in 1998 (was it really that long? - I'm feeling old!) it looked as if they were the heir apparent to a then declining Oasis' thrown as Kings of British rock music, and the band that would bring the Blues bang up to the date and influence a host of new Blues-based bands. Neither of these things happened of course, in the UK Oasis still reign (as the ONLY truly British Rock'n'Roll band?), The White Stripes of course became that all conquering/influencing contemporary Blues band and Gomez have remained relatively unknown. Yet despite this lack of, deserved, commercial success (and a, once adoring, critical backlash) Gomez have continued to produce more refined blues-based music with each release, culminating in this fantastic 3-disc set (2 CD and DVD) showcasing the band live at the Fillmore (an indication they are more appreciated Stateside?), a venue made famous by a little known Blues/Rock band of course (and the extended jams, notorious of the Allman Brothers, seem to have rubbed off here). Gomez have superb pop songs at their disposal of course, so little application would still result in an enjoyable listening experience but there's an urgency (not prevalent on the studio albums) that injects new life into already familiar songs (no lazy retreads!). In Ben Ottewell they possibly possess the best male Blues vocalist for some years... his rich, gravely voice certainly adds much depth to songs which could otherwise be construed as light/pop fair. Highlight has to be the Tom Waits cover 'Going Out West' (again! - see my review of Ash Grunwald this issue) a powerful take on an already great song.
