Lots of people remember Jack Hargreaves not only for this programme but also for his appearance with Fred Dineage and others on the childrens TV show "How?".
This first DVD includes a travellers meeting at Brockenhurst and the trade in piebald ponies which are individually recognizable with their unique markings which discourage theft.
These DVDs will appeal to people who believe we should keep some of the old crafts alive sharing information and techniques across generations and to anyone who likes all things natural and enjoys watching the series "Country Ways", for example.
There are 3 episodes on each DVD. This is Vol 1, and after you watch it, you'll have to get the others as well!

I grew up watching Jack with my dad and this series brings back great memories. If you are at all interested in the countryside then buy this. His manner in presenting is gentle and factual. His knoweledge is vast and his pipe is always present.

God bless Jack.

I loved watching Jack Hargreaves on TV many years ago, when he presented from that atmospheric shed in his garden in the New Forest. It evoked another era, and you could almost smell the country in the air as you watched. Jack's films have become even more valuable with the passage of time and they are a priceless glimpse into a rural past that has been lost. His memory went back a long way and he had a genuine love of all country matters which comes through strongly in all these episodes. They are all equally watchable if you are interested in old country ways. Jack Hargreaves commentary is wonderfully natural and idiosyncratic, which matches the films perfectly. He has captured a countryside that has now all but vanished. His enthusiasm and knowledge is obvious. Most importantly for us is that he wanted to pass that on. These films are his wonderful legacy to us.

This one contains the following: Episode 1 Appleby Fair/Ramming Time. Jack visits the famous Gypsy Horse fair at Appleby and watches some shy young rams introduced to the ladies. Episode 2 New Forest Point-To-Point/Apple Grafting Episode. Jack watches a point-To-Point race in the New Forest and watches the intricate apple grafting process. 3 Kingfishers/Model Carts. Jack studies the beautiful Kingfisher and shows us some beautifully made models by an unknown craftsman. My own personal favourites are Ramming Time and Model Carts, but they are all a delight. How refreshing to be reminded of happer times when political correctness did not rule the world. Even better now than when they were first shown. Now is a good time to buy them. They have dropped in price considerably from when they were first released, and can be picked up for a bargain at the time of this review if you are prepared to buy used DVD's as I did.

The inimitable Jack Hargreaves. His easy, laid-back style brings back many happy memories of this immensely popular 'country life' TV series of yesteryear.

The Out Of Town video's and DVD's series by Jack Hargreaves can be enjoyed by everyone. Especially those who remember horse transport, the pony and trap, fly or coarse fishing, summer fields, hay making, the Wheelwright, the Blacksmith, shepherding or ponies in the New Forest. For those too young, these programs will be a delight to learn from. They can be watched with enjoyment time and again, there are no other video progames available to compare them with!
Nostalgia pure and simple! I heartily recommend collecting all nine programs.
