By Graeme Stewart VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
After seeing Rick wakeman at Perth City Halls last year and being blown away by the quality of his playing,I was feeling I was back in the 70's again, waiting patiently for this album to arrive.Unfortunately, while the Maestro has delivered the goods himself, the people around him don't all measure up. Ricks' playing is the strongest it has been on album for many a year, and coupled with the fact that he has returned to using MOOG synthesisers in the last few years,it brings back a sound quality he hadn't had for a while.BUT,and it is a big but,not all of those on the album are up to the great mans standard.Lee Pomeroy, and Tony Fernandez are a solid, effective rythym section,a must for the bulk of the album, which has a driving rock feel to it,less classically tinged than Rick's 70's work.I've always felt that the only place Rick needs a guitarist is in YES,and this album is no exception. Bland rock guitars cut in,sometimes inapropriately,(as at the end of "Cathedral of Sound"),where another keyboard sound, such as a really meaty hammond organ would have been more apt,In places,a synth "duel" between contrasting sounds would have been preferable.BUT(again),there is more to despair of.My first hearing of any of the music was a 2-3 minute snippet on Rick's website.I remembered thinking that the Synths were excellent, and that Damien Wilson, the vocalist was putting in a powerful performance. I had seen him live with Rick, and thought he was adequate, but nothing else.Unfortunately, when I finally heard the whole album,I realised that he gave the same powerful performance all the way through! No light or shade, just a bellowing, limited range, multitracked performance, where a bit of subtlty would have been a welcome respite. This is the biggest disappointment of the album.I don't know if Rick felt obliged to use him on every track,(there are no instrumentals, strange to say,)but it is very wearing. In giving the album 3 out of 5,it is for the quality of performance & writing by Rick, and the rythym sections' playing. If it hadn't been for the guitars, and most especially the vocals,it would have been a perfect score.

OKish 22 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
Rick returns with a 4 piece rock band, choir and a concept album with a couple of excellent new pieces ('Cathedral of the Sky', 'The Mission') and some very average cod-Yes numbers. Rick is his usual brilliant self on a boggling array of keyboards ie brilliant. Joining on vocals is the excellent Damien Wilson with an Andersonesque voice. Apparently Wilson is a good songwriter and I think Rick missed an excellent opportunity here to broaden his range a little and collaborate. Frankly his lyrics on this album leave me cringing in parts. Unfortunately Wilson has pulled out of a very punishing tour for the sake of his vocal chords and I hope differences can be resolved. Best of its kind since 'Time Machine'.

Rick has released a massive number of albums over the last few decades and although I am certainly a fan I like to listen to them before I buy, as some have not been to my taste. When I listened to this one it was perhaps different to what I expected, but I feel that it is certainly his best “rock” album in years! The sound is certainly “heavier” than “Return to the Centre of the Earth” with Ant Glynne's stunning guitar work perfectly complimenting rick's keyboards. From the opening sequences of “Out There” with haunting keyboards following by one of Rick's best keyboard intros, to the grand choir, classical organ sound of “Cathedral in the Sky” this album is Rick Wakeman and his band at their best.
I rushed out to buy the album and have not stopped playing it on “full volume”!!!!!!
